Gaseous acetic acid

Experiments with gaseous acetic acid have been performed for disinfection of seeds intended for the production of bean sprouts (Delaquis et al., 1999). Salmonella typhimurium and E. coli 0157 H7 were eradicated from the surface of mung bean seeds and it was reported that the seed germination loss was not too large. The seeds have often been the suspected source of contamination in sprout-associated outbreaks and sanitation methods that do not interfere with the germination of the seeds are appreciated. Other volatile chemical treatments have been tested for lethality to Salmonella spp. on alfalfa seeds and sprouts with varying results both on the efficacy of the disinfectant and its effect on sensory qualities (Weissinger et al., 2001). [Pg.440]

Broadened band. The Vs (OH) band goes from 30 cm-1 width in the case of gaseous acetic acid monometer, and it increases up to 400 cm-1 for hydrogen-bonded dimers. [Pg.243]

CHsCOOH (liq.). The heat of combustion of liquid acetic acid was measured by Berthelot and Matignon8 and Roth,2 and of gaseous acetic acid by Thomsen.15 Applying a Washburn correction of —0.10 per cent, we have computed Roth s2 value to be 206.7 for the heat of combustion of the liquid, and that of Berthelot and Matignon3 to be 209.2. Thomsen s15 data yield 227.4 for the heat of reaction of gaseous acetic acid at 111° with oxygen at 18° to form gaseous carbon dioxide and liquid water at 18°. [Pg.238]

What is this difference between, say, sodium ehloride and acetic acid Electron diffraction studies furnish an answer. They show that gaseous acetic acid consists of separate, neutral molecules and the bonding of the atoms inside these molecules is essentially nonionic. These neutral moleeules retain their identity and separate existence when the gas condenses to give liquid aeetie acid. Hence, there are hardly any ions in liquid acetic acid and therefore little conductivity. [Pg.226]

The Kolbe electrolysis of acetate to ethane and carbon dioxide was modeled for a parallel-plate reactor. Three zones were considered in the model a turbulent bulk region, and a thin diffusion layer at each electrode [184b]. The same authors describe the electrolysis of gaseous acetic acid in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) reactor. Platinized... [Pg.934]

The heat of formation of gaseous acetic acid is — 109-9 kcal/ mole, which refers to one half of the heat of formation of the dimer, so that one half of the heat of dimerization must be subtracted from this heat of formation to give that of gaseous, monomeric acetic acid. The heat of dimerization has been measured as — M-5 kcal/ mole,< so that we arrive at a value of — 102 8 kcal/mole for the heat of formation of the gaseous moiiomer. Using the value for the heat of formation of the radical CH OOO of 45 zb 2 kcal/mole we obtain the value D(CH3COO—H) — 110 ib 2 kcal/mole from the relationship... [Pg.143]

Gaseous acetic acid molecules have a certain tendency to form dimers. (A dimer is a molecule formed by the association of two identical, simpler molecules.) The equilibrium constant Kc at 25°C for this reaction is 3.2 X 10. ... [Pg.657]

Acetic acid vapor contains a proportion of planar, hydrogen-bonded dimers (23). The apparent dipole moment of molecules in pure gaseous acetic acid increases with increasing temperature. Suggest an interpretation of the latter observation. [Pg.459]
