Basic oxygen steel process

Crambe was introduced to the United States in the 1970s. It is an oilseed, the oil of which is very high in emcic acid [112-86-7] (13-docosanoic acid), C22H42O2. This oil can be used to provide industrial lubricants, especially those needed for the basic oxygen furnace process for making steel (qv). Crambe is grown in relatively small volume in the midwestem United States. [Pg.449]

The BOS (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking) process is the major modem process for making bulk steels. Apart from special quality steels (such as stainless steel), all flat products, and long products over a certain size, are rolled from steel made by the BOS process. [Pg.114]

Batch-type production processes, particularly those with small batch sizes, have less energy efficiency as compared to continuous processes. A typical example of a batch operation on a relatively small scale is the production of titanium in 1-ton batches of the metal. The energy efficiency of the process is much less than that of continuous methods such as iron being produced in a blast furnace, or even of large-scale batch methods such as basic oxygen steel-making. The heat losses per unit of production are much less in continuous and large-batch processes, and this also enables the waste heat from process streams to be used. [Pg.750]

The open hearth steelmaking process was invented in 1863 and up to the early 1960s was the principal means of producing steel in the U.S.A. and the U.K. [11.2]. Since then, it has been displaced by the basic oxygen steelmaking processes (see sections 27.4 and 27.5). [Pg.97]

Calcium carbide was initially used as the desulfurising agent. It was added, in a granular form, to the torpedo ladle (used to transfer the molten iron to the basic oxygen steel making process). It is now generally injected as a powdered mixture with lime (typically 60 to 80 % of calcium carbide) into the molten pig-iron in the transfer ladle. Top-Blown Basic Oxygen Process. The top-blown basic oxygen process is conducted ia a cylindrical furnace somewhat similar to a Bessemer converter. This furnace has a dished bottom without holes and a tmncated cone-shaped top section ia which the mouth of the vessel is located. The furnace shell is made of steel plates ca 50-mm thick it is lined with refractory 600—1200-mm thick (11). [Pg.376]

There are two process routes for making steel in the UK today the electric arc furnace and the basic oxygen converter. The latter requires a charge of molten iron, which is produced in blast furnaces. The raw materials for producing molten iron are iron ore, coking coal, and fluxes (materials that help the chemical process) - mainly limestone. [Pg.112]
