Basal maintenance

Intestinal cytochrome P-450, in common with its hepatic isozymes, is induced by a wide variety of xenobiotics. Not only intraluminal iron but also selenium is critically required for basal maintenance of intestinal cytochrome P-450 content and its dependent mixed-function oxidase. Accordingly, acute deprivation of either element for as short a period as a single day reduced basal intestinal cytochrome P-450 content by limiting the formation and/or availability of its prosthetic heme (Pascoe et al. 1983). Whereas both intraluminal iron and selenium were required for maintenance of the prosthetic apocytochrome moiety of the constitutive intestinal isozyme, only intraluminal selenium was required for the viability of apocytochrome of the P-naphthoflavone-inducible P-448 (Pascoe and Correia 1985). [Pg.623]

Animal nutritionists have developed formulas to guide them in recommending the amount of food to feed animals in captive situations such as in zoos. First, the number of calorics needed to maintain the animal while at rest is determined—this is called the basal metabolic rate (BMR). In general, a reptile s BMR is only 15 percent that of a placental mammal, while a bird s is quite a bit higher than both a reptile s and a mammal s. For all animals, the number of calories they should receive on a maintenance diet is twice that used at the basal metabolic rate. In one case report a 37-year-old male maintenance fitter was accidentally exposed to a large cloud of hot acetic acid while disconnecting a pressurized pump. The pain hypothesis suggests that in some subjects self-injury does not induce pain because excessive basal activity of opioid systems in the CNS has led to an opioid analgesic state. The addiction hypothesis posits that particularly repetitive and stereotyped forms of self-injury stimulate the production and release of en-dogeneous opioids. Therefore, chronic maintenance of self-injury may be due to addiction to endogenous opioids or to positive reinforcement by a central release of opioids triggered by the self-injurious behavior. Irrespective of which hypothesis one favors, treatment with opiate antagonists seems to be a rational approach. [Pg.358]
