Ballasting

Swamp Barges operate in very shallow water (less than 20 ft). They can be towed onto location and are then ballasted so that they sit on bottom . The drilling unit is mounted onto the barge. This type of unit is popular in the swamp areas of Nigeria. [Pg.32]

Semi-submersible rigs are often referred to as semis , and are a floating type of rig. Like the jack-up, a semi is self contained. The structure is supported by large pontoons which are ballasted with water to provide the required stability and height. The rig is held in position by anchors and mooring lines or dynamically positioned by thrusters. A large diameter steel pipe ( riser ) is connected to the sea-bed and serves as a conduit for the drill string. The blowout preventer (BOP) is also located at the sea-bed ( sub sea stack ). [Pg.33]

Unprotected steel corrodes at a rate which is generally assumed to be 0.1 to 0.2mm per annum. Factors that influence the actual rate of corrosion include the maintenance program applied by the owner - particularly preservation of protective coatings, efficiency of cathodic protection systems in ballast tanks, corrosive properties of the cargo carried and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Under extreme conditions it has been known for the annual rate of corrosion on unprotected steel exposed on both surfaces to approach 1mm. [Pg.1048]

The reaction occurs at essentially adiabatic conditions with a large temperature rise at the inlet surface of the catalyst. The predominant temperature control is thermal ballast in the form of excess methanol or steam, or both, which is in the feed. If a plant is to produce a product containing 50 to 55% formaldehyde and no more than 1.5% methanol, the amount of steam that can be added is limited, and both excess methanol and steam are needed as ballast. Recycled methanol requited for a 50—55% product is 0.25—0.50 parts per part of fresh methanol (76,77). [Pg.493]

In the United States, flat-roUed, electrical steel is available in the following classes (12) nonoriented, fiiUy processed nonoriented, semiprocessed nonoriented, fiiU-hard and grain-oriented, fiiUy processed. Loss limits are quoted at 1.5 T (1.5 x lO" G). The loss limits at 1.7 T (1.7 X ICf G) of the fourth class and of the high induction grades are shown in Table 2. In modem PMR constmction, thermal iasulation that is unaffected by water or that can be kept dry ia some manner is required. Extmded polystyrene (XEPS) foam iasulation boards ate commonly employed (see Insulation, thermal). They ate placed on top of the waterproofing roof membrane, which is next to the deck. The iasulation should not be adhered to the membrane. Ballast at the rate of >48.8 kg/m (1000 lb/100 ft ) holds the iasulation ia place and offers protection from the sun. The iasulation joiats ate open and drainage must be provided. Various other materials, eg, patio blocks and concrete slabs, ate also used as sutfaciags and ballast. Single-ply membranes offer the widest range of systems in the roofing industry. The three basic systems are ballasted, fuUy adhered, and mechanically fastened. From a cost standpoint, the fuUy adhered system is the most expensive to install, the ballasted system the least. The protected-membrane roofing system can be used with any of the basic systems. The specifications for these systems are pubHshed by the various manufacturers. The following gives a brief description of the roof assembhes. [Pg.212]

Ba.lla.sted. A ballasted roof assembly consists of a membrane or membrane and substrate material (insulation, sHp sheet, etc) loosely laid over a deck with the assembly held in place using ballast. A minimum ballast weight of 48.9 kg/m or 10 pounds per square foot (PSF) is used. The ballast can consist of smooth rounded stone, cmshed stone (a separator sheet must be used between the cmshed stone and the membrane), or pavers (both standard and lightweight). Both stone and pavers come in a wide variety of colors. The membrane is affixed to the building only at the deck perimeter (roof edge) and at various penetrations. Wall and penetration flashings are typically fuUy adhered and sealed to prevent water entry into the roof assembly. The maximum slope a ballasted system should be installed over is 16.7 cm/m. [Pg.212]

The prime installation method is mechanically fastened but fully adhered and ballasted appHcations can also be used. CSPE exhibits strong resistance not only to weathering but also to a broad range of chemicals and pollutants it is also inherently ozone-resistant. It can be produced in many colors and the sheet widths are typically 5—6.5 ft (1.5—1.65 m). The physical characteristics of a CSPE sheet have been described (17) (see Elastomers, SYNTHETIC-Cm OROSULFONATED POLYETHYLENE). [Pg.213]

EPDM is by far the most widely used material in the ballasted roofing system constmction. Because of EPDM s flexibiHty, very large sheets of up to 10,000 square feet (929 m ) can be deHvered to the job site in compact roUs that offer reduced labor on the roof in the seaming process. The typical EPDM sheet size used in ballasted systems is 12 by 30 m and 1.1 mm thick. EPDM is also widely used in both the fully adhered and mechanically fastened roofing systems. In these constmctions, both 1.1- and 1.5-mm thick material is used with widths from 2.1 to 15 m. A majority of the installations use nonreinforced sheet, although reinforced membrane can also be used in all of the system types. The majority of the reinforced sheets go into mechanically fastened systems. [Pg.213]

The greater portion of PVC is installed in the mechanically fastened roofing system a lesser portion is installed in fully adhered appHcations. Although PVC was once heavily used in ballasted roofing systems, there are only a small number installed in the 1990s. Fleece-back membrane is popular in the PVC constmction for both fully adhered appHcations as well as in appHcations where a separator sheet is needed. PVCs ate resistant to vafious weather conditions, bactefial growth, and industfial chemicals. These membranes ate chemically incompatible with bituminous materials. PVCs ate offered in a variety of colors. The physical characteristics of a PVC membrane have been described (15). [Pg.214]

Subtractive dye precursors (couplers) that could be immobilized in each of the silver containing layers were sought, so that dye formation in all layers could proceed simultaneously rather than successively. The first of these to be commercialized were in Agfacolor Neue and Ansco Color films, introduced soon after Kodachrome film. These reversal working films contained colorless couplers that were immobilized (ballasted) by the attachment of long paraffinic chains.
