Ball milling grinding process

Thus, macroradicals have been obtained by stretching fibers (20), deforming plastics by compression (37), ball mill grinding (11), freezing and grinding of polymer solutions (10), ultrasonic irradiation (I), mastication (19), dispersion in a microblender (25), and other mechanical techniques (36). Many reviews on the formation of macroradicals by degradative processes have also been published (5, 12,13,16, 33).

Mixing. The most widely used mixing method is wet ball milling, which is a slow process, but it can be left unattended for the whole procedure. A ball mill is a barrel that rotates on its axis and is partially filled with a grinding medium (usually of ceramic material) in the form of spheres, cylinders, or rods. It mixes the raw oxides, eliminates aggregates, and can reduce the particle size. 

The second process to finish phthalocyanine, which is more important for P-copper phthalocyanine, involves grinding the dry or aqueous form in a ball mill or a kneader (64). Agents such as sodium chloride, which have to be removed by boiling with water after the grinding, are used. Solvents like aromatic hydrocarbons, xylene, nitrobenzene or chlorobenzene, alcohols, ketones, or esters can be used (1). In the absence of a solvent, the cmde P-phthalocyanine is converted to the a-form (57,65) and has to be treated with a solvent to regain the P-modification. The aggregate stmcture also has an impact on the dispersion behavior of a- and P-copper phthalocyanine pigments (66). 

Another process, which also generates elemental sulfur as a by-product, has been patented by Envirotech Research Center in Salt Lake City (29). In the Electroslurry process, a ball mill finely grinds a chalcopyrite concentrate, which reacts with an acidic copper sulfate solution for iron removal. The Hquor is electrolyzed and the iron is oxidized to the ferric form. This latter step leaches copper from the copper sulfide for deposition on the cathode. Elemental sulfur is recovered at the same time. 

Raw material for dry process plants is ground in closed-circuit ball mills with air separators, which may be set for any desired fineness. Drying is usually carried out in separate units, but waste heat can be utilized directiy in the mill by coupling the raw mill to the kiln. Autogenous mills, which operate without grinding media are not widely used. For suspension preheater-type kilns, a roUer mill utilizes the exit gas from the preheater to dry the material in suspension in the mill. 

A wet-process plant maldug cement from shale and hmestoue has been described by Bergstrom [Roc/c Prod., 64—71 (June 1967)]. There are separate facilities for grinding each type of stone. The ball mill operates in closed circuit with a battery of Dutch State Mines screens. Material passing the screens is 85 percent minus 200 mesh. The entire process is extensively instrumented and controlled by computer. Automatic devices sample crushed rock, slurries, and finished product for chemical analysis by X-rav fluorescence. Mill circuit feed rates and water additions are governed by conventional controllers.
