Distantly related plants, such as rose, jasmin, and lavender have quite independently gone down this road of complexity, based on different groups of chemical constituents. We may conclude, therefore, that complexity of odor has evolved as being the most effective way of evoking a desired response from an animal with the ability to smell and the ability to memorize odor. What is remarkable is that the particular combinations of materials that individual flowers produce to make up their fragrance have, to our own sense of smell, an identity far greater than a random mixture of as many ill-assorted chemicals. Perhaps we may infer from this, in view of the similarity of our receptor cells, that the balance of materials is as important to the olfactory mechanism of the bee as it is to our own in producing a sense of identity and aesthetic pleasure. 

Since in the simplified procedure only the hydrocarbon fraction from silica is reseparated on alumina, while in the extended procedure all the material remaining after removal of the saturates is rechromatographed on alumina, the contents of polyaromatics from the former is necessarily lower (9.4% ) than from the latter (28.6% ) procedure. The balance of material is represented in the simplified procedure by fraction Polar 1 (see also References 2, 3, and below). 

For the sake of completeness, advective effusions also need to be mentioned here (see Chapters 13 and 14). Although their signifieanee for global balances of materials (e.g. CO, see Chapter 5) has been hardly investigated yet, the hot vents and cold seeps, usually locally confined, seem to be rather unimportant for the interaction described here. Nevertheless, they may be relevant when looking on specific element cycles (e.g. Li, B or Ba). 

The preparation of preceramic material involves processing a high purity, easily spinnable material, usually a preceramic polymer or sol. In either case, specialized equipment is required to produce the material because there is no other market for these exaet materials (although there are some close relatives). The high level of purity, the delicate balance of material properties, and the dedicated, customized equipment make preparation an expensive process.
