Nylon films are used in lamination or coated form to ensure heat sealabiHty and enhance barrier properties. The largest uses are as thermoforming webs for twin-web processed meat and cheese packagiag under vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. Other uses include bags for red meat, boil-ia-bags, bag-in-box for wine, and as the outer protective layer for aluminum foil in cookie and vacuum coffee packages. 

Coffee vacuum-packed in flexible, bag-in-box packages has gained wide acceptance in Europe. The inner liner, usually a plastic-laminated foil, is formed into a hard brick shape during the vacuum process (30). In the United States, a printed multilaminated flexible stmcture is used to form the brick pack which is sold as is at retail. These types of packages provide a barrier to moisture and oxygen similar to that of a metal can. 

Advantages of the drum are protection of contents, ease of reclosure, and appreciable reuse-resale value. A serious limitation is the inefficient use of space because of the cylindrical shape, which results in high storage and transportation costs. To overcome this, a fiber drrtm with a square cross section (Ro-Con drum) and the brtlk corrugated bag in box have been developed.

In comparison, significant losses of a number of wine components must be expected when in contact with polyolefins because of the large K values for non-polar compounds. Packaging wine in polyolefin-coated containers, which for example is the case for bag-in-box packaging, does not appear to make sense. Quality decreases can occur not only by loss of the aroma but by the alteration of the aroma character due to different K values for different aroma compounds. The uptake (scalping) of non-polar compounds like limonene from fruit juices by polyolefins has been experimentally confirmed (Hirose et al., 1988 Mannheim et al., 1988). 

A bulk box, sometimes called bag in box, consists of a box within a box plus other elements such as end pads, PE bag liners, and closing materials (tape, glue, staples).
