Bacterial attack is an early stage in the degradation of wood exposed in wet or moist conditions. Bacteria can be the dominant form of attack when fungal decay is suppressed by a wood-preserving treatment. Bacteria can attack the cell wall of wood by tunnelling, cavitation or erosion mechanisms (Eaton and Hale, 1993). 

Sugar maple was reacted with propylene and butylene oxide (Rowell etal., 1982). The modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR), fibre stress at proportional limit, and maximum crushing strength all exhibited a reduction, compared to unmodified samples. Nilsson and Rowell (1983) reacted ponderosa pine with butylene oxide and exposed the wood in an unsterile soil decay test. Symptoms Leaves may show irregular tunnels under the leaf surfaces. The larvae enter a fan of leaves at the top and tunnel down toward the rhizome, where they may eat the whole interior without being noticed. Borers often introduce soft rot bacteria into rhizomes as they feed, causing a wet slimy, smelly rot... 

All laboratory tests for biological resistance conducted to this point show that acetylation is an effective means of reducing or eliminating attack by soft-, white-, and brown-rot fungi, tunneling bacteria, and subterranean termites. Tests are presently underway on several lignocellulosic composites in outdoor environments. 

To minimize clay dust inhalation, it is best to buy premixed clay. Potters should change clothes before leaving their work area. Fresh clay should be used to minimize bacteria and mold growth. To avoid median nerve damage and resulting carpal tunnel syndrome, the potter s wrist should be unflexed frequently. A face mask can be worn when clay dust is present.
