Bacteria extension

The persistence of halogenated phenols and anilines in anaerobic environments is determined by the activity of anaerobic dehalogenating bacteria. Extensive effort has therefore been devoted to isolating the relevant organisms and an increasing number of strains have been obtained in pure culture. They display different specificities for the position of the halogen several bring about dechlorination specifically at positions ortho to the chlorine, while some of them can use the aromatic substrate as... [Pg.487]

Because of the ultimate importance of vancomycin in the treatment of often fatal infections caused by multiple-resistant bacteria, extensive efforts have been directed toward the discovery of vancomycin derivatives with activity against these drug-resistant bacteria [89]. As a result of these efforts, several derivatives such as 41 (LY264826) have been found to be up to 500 times more effective than vancomycin itself. The most notable difference is the presence of another... [Pg.138]

Recent advances in understanding the phylogeny of photosynthetic prokaryotes have been made by comparing oligonucleotides derived from 16S rRNA [1]. Results of these analyses have renewed general interest in the comparative biochemistry of photosynthetic bacteria, since it is now clear that they are closely related to many non-photosynthetic bacteria. Extensive phylogenetic analysis has indicated that the ancestry of most, if not all, eubacteria and even the ancestry of the cellular organelles of eukaryotes, the mitochondria and chloroplasts, lies deeply entrenched in the history of the photosynthetic bacteria. [Pg.21]

In purple bacteria, extensive study on the light harvesting complex and subsequent redox reactions were done. Femtosecond energy transfer between units allows channeling... [Pg.289]

Lactic Acid B cteri. The lactic acid bacteria are ubiquitous in nature from plant surfaces to gastrointestinal tracts of many animals. These gram-positive facultative anaerobes convert carbohydrates (qv) to lactic acid and are used extensively in the food industry, for example, for the production of yogurt, cheese, sour dough bread, etc. The sour aromatic flavor imparted upon fermentation appears to be a desirable food trait. In addition, certain species produce a variety of antibiotics. [Pg.249]

The manner in which many of these bacteria cany on their chemical processes is qmte comphcated and in some cases not fuUy understood. The role of sulfate-reducing bacteria (anaerobic) in promoting corrosion has been extensively investigated. The sulfates in shghtly acid to alkaline (pH 6 to 9) soils are reduced by these bacteria to form calcium sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. When these compounds come in contact with underground iron pipes, conversion of the iron to iron sulfide occurs. As these bacieria thrive under these conditions, they will continue to promote this reaction until failure of the pipe occurs. [Pg.2420]

Waters While MIC-causing bacteria may arrive at the surface of their corrosion worksite by almost any transportation system, there is always water present to allow them to become ac tive and cause MIC to occur. There are plenty of examples of even superpure waters having sufficient microorganisms present to feed, divide, and multiply when even the smallest trace of a viable food-stuff is present (e.g., the so-called watei for injection in the pharmaceutical industiy has been the observed subject of extensive corrosion of pohshed stainless steel tanks, piping, and so on). [Pg.2421]

Ingested plant metabolites, drugs and other compounds are processed both by the animal and by the microbial flora of the gut. The composition and activities of the gut microflora vary greatly from one animal species to another and have been very extensively reviewed." In true ruminants (sheep, cattle and deer) and in functional ruminants, such as camels and llamas, a mixed population of bacteria,... [Pg.95]

The individual steps in the elongation of the fatty acid chain are quite similar in bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. The ease of purification of the separate enzymes from bacteria and plants made it possible in the beginning to sort out each step in the pathway, and then by extension to see the pattern of biosynthesis in animals. The reactions are summarized in Figure 25.7. The elongation reactions begin with the formation of acetyl-ACP and malonyl-ACP, which... [Pg.808]
