The injury and Illness Prevention program provides many of the basic priorities commonly utilized by safety and health professionals. As identified by OSHA, the six major elements of an effective injury and illness prevention program include 

The identified common elements are the basic fonndation upon which a safety and health professional can bnild a snccessful safety and health program. Although all of the identified elements are important, the lynchpin of any successful safety and health program is the leadership of the management team as well as the funding and snpport to permit the development of the other essential elements. Pedant s point. I wrote the weasel phrase essentially carbon because carbon is not the actual agent it is used to make carbon monoxide, CO, which is commonly held to be the actual reducing agent. 

The eponymous blast of a blast furnace is a blast of air. It may seem odd to use oxygen-rich air in a process designed to remove oxygen from an ore, but it is used to oxidize the carbon to carbon monoxide and also to help ensure that the contents of the furnace do not settle to the bottom. Care must be taken, of course, to ensure that the blast is not so strong that the contents are blown out through the top A gas such as carbon monoxide is much more fleet of molecular foot than lumps of coke and can penetrate into and attack the molten ore wherever it lies. The partial combustion of the coke—for that is what the formation of CO represents— also serves to raise the temperature within the furnace and render the ore molten. 

I shall now take you in imagination into the heart and heat of the furnace. There we see the hot glowing solid coke, with its vigorously vibrating carhon atoms compressingandstretchingandstrainingattheirbonds. 

One fate for the iron recovered with such a seriously huge input of energy, other than its ennoblement and deployment as steel, is its sad reversion to a state similar to its original ore. I describe the death of metal in the section on corrosion. Reaction 8.

Although each Back-to-Basics article is quite brief, a very short summary of each article is provided in Appendix A for readers who want a succinct, informative account that provides a quick working understanding of the topic. 

The result of the Back-to-Basics series is an accumulation of some 50 separate but interrelated expositions of mass spectrometric principles and apparatus. Some areas of mass spectrometry, such as ion cyclotron resonance and ion trap instruments, have not been covered except for passing references. This decision has not been due to any bias by the authors or Micromass but simply reflects the large amount of writing that had to be done and the needs of the greatest proportion of users. 

For various reasons, it has been decided to close the present series of Back-to-Basics and collect the articles in a book that can be placed on a shelf and used as a reference source. It is an unusual book format, having a large number of rather short chapters together with a collection of brief summaries, included as Appendix A. Thus the book will still serve the dual purposes of describing fundamentals and additionally providing a concise synopsis of each article.
