Average Chemical Composition

Low concentrations of highly polar (functional) end-groups are still most commonly determined by titration. When applied for this purpose, titration is a simple and reliable technique which often outperforms complicated instrumental methods. In order to obtain the number of end-groups per molecule, the number-average molar mass must also be measured (see Section 7.3). 

Spectroscopic techniques are highly appropriate tools for determining the average chemical composition, provided that (a) the spectral properties of the different comonomeric units are sufficiently different, (b) the end-groups do not interfere with the measurement and (c) the imit absorptivity is independent of the molar mass and of the chain sequence. 

Infrared spectroscopy is predominantly performed in the Fourier-transform mode and then commonly abbreviated as FTIR. The great advantage of FTIR spectroscopy is the great number of measurement options (and accessories), that allow spectra to be taken conveniently from just about any kind of sample. Polymeric powders can be characterized by pressing them into the conventional KBr pellets, but also, without any sample preparation, by diffuse reflectance (DRIFT). Very thin films of polymers can be measured in the conventional transmission mode, but any kind of film (thick or thin), as well as large polymeric objects, can be measured by ATR. ATR probes can also be used to characterize solutions 

High-efficiency filtration is the most common method of collecting particulate mailer for the determination of chemical composition. Chemical analysis of filter. samples provides information on the composition of the aerosol averaged over all particle sizes and over the time interval of sampling. For a constant gas-sampling rate, the mass concentration of species i averaged over particle size and time is related to the size compo.sition probability density function as follows

As with generation rates, the chemical composition of MSW varies significantly with local socioeconomic and demographic conditions. The average chemical composition of MSW in the United States is given in Table 1 (16).

The average composition of the feed slurry used in the treatments is shown in Table 2. The composition of TS, VS and COD did not vary significantly between runs. There was significant variation (P=0.001) in BODw, VFA and NH3-N, which was related to the time of year. These characteristics generally increased with respect to TS in summer when higher ambient temperatures promoted microbial activity. The average chemical composition was veiy similar to that of slurries used elsewhere in laboratory scale treatment experiments (3, 4, 7, 13).

A light fuel oil with an average chemical composition of C<,H15 is burned with oxygen in a bomb calorimeter. The heat evolved is measured as 47,730 J g-1 for the reaction at 25°C. Calculate the standard heat of combustion of the fuel oil at 25°C with H20(s) and C02(fl) as products. Note that the reaction in the bomb occurs at constant volume, produces liquid water as a product, and goes to completion. 

Polymers are typically complex mixtures in which the composition depends on polymerization kinetics and mechanism and process conditions. To obtain polymeric materials of desired characteristics, polymer processing must be carefully controlled and monitored. Furthermore, one needs to understand the influence of molecular parameters on polymer properties and end-use performance. Molar mass distribution and average chemical composition may no longer provide sufficient information for process and quality control nor define structure-property relationships. Modern characterization methods now require multidimensional analytical approaches rather then average properties of the whole sample [1].
