Automobile hydrogen storage

Because of their high volumetric density, intermetallic hydrides are also used as hydrogen storage materials in advanced fuel cell driven submarines, prototype passenger ships, forklifts and hydrogen automobiles as well as auxiliary power units for laptops. 

The energy efficient automobile is also a perfect starting point for subsequent introduction of fuel cell drives, where one would no longer need to put a 65-100 kW fuel cell in to get a decent performance and hence could do with smaller on-board hydrogen storage pressure and get a safer system still... 

In July 1998, Toyota said it would try to have a fuel cell automobile ready by 2003, but later this target date was dropped. Toyota was sharing technology with partner GM in a 5-year collaboration on electric, hybrid, and fuel cell cars. In 1998, the research division was testing methanol reformers and metal-hydrid hydrogen storage and had prototypes of each.

David Keith Another reason 1 am not that worried about hydrogen storage involves where in the transport infrastructure you would first introduce hydrogen. The conventional view, of course, is in personal automobiles. Our view at Carnegie Mellon is different. We suggest a focus on heavy transport systems, such as ships, heavy trucks, and rail.
