Auras

People who go in for expensive cocktails like to cool them with ice cubes which are crystal clear - it adds to the aura of bejewelled, refreshing purity. Unfortunately, ice cubes grown in an ordinary fridge are cloudy. So establishments which cater for upmarket clients install special machines to make clear ice. 

In the minds of many, especially those who have not had the opportunity to use it, catalytic hydrogenation has acquired an aura of mystery the choice of catalyst seems capricious, operating conditions arbitrary, catalyst preparation secret, and the working of the catalyst unfathomable. It is the purpose of this work to meet these objections to provide rationale for choice of catalyst and conditions to acquaint the reader with catalysts, equipment, and procedure and to impart the conviction that hydrogenation is a powerful, readily handled, broad-scoped procedure of general utility for synthesis in both laboratory and industrial plant.

Although a carrier is often the major constituent of a catalyst pellet, one often finds that there are materials that are added in small amounts during catalyst preparation in order to impart improved characteristics to the finished catalyst. These materials are referred to as promoters. They may lead to better activity, selectivity, or stability. The manner in which promoters act is not well understood, although a number of plausible explanations have been set forth. They remain one of the reasons for the black magic aura of catalysis.
