Augmented reality display

Augmented Reality (Display) Head-mounted display with transparent glasses that show semitransparent data or images superimposed over the wearer s field of vision to augment perception of or knowledge about reahty. 

The multimodality guidance and navigation information can be displayed to the surgeon via traditional two-dimensional (2D) display screens available in the interventional suites in the form of an augmented reality display. This is either direcdy overlaid onto the patient s skin (i.e., optical-based augmented reahty) or by augmenting a video display of the patient (i.e., video-based augmented reahty) via tracked head-mounted (stereoscopic) displays, or recently developed and commercially available three-dimensional (3D) displays [14]. 

The therapeutic decision process is supported and augmented in several ways. First, precise 3D display of the underlying patho-anatomy is achieved by visualization using the augmented reality system. Second, the resection of a lesion can be simulated by displaying the onco-surgical safety margin (Fig. 29.8). Third, individual distance measurements can be made in 3D a snap in mechanism...

Taking into account the objectives set at the beginning of the document, the user interface has been developed following mobile devices designs. It consists of a main window where augmented reality is displayed, a lateral bar on the left side for navigation purposes and a message bar on top of the main window to display information and instructions. When users first execute the software they access directly the Board Discovery Mode . In this mode, when they point at the electronic board with the camera they can see the names of the main components on top of them (Fig. 9).
