An audit is a systematic, independent review to verify conformance with established guidelines or standards. An audit uses a well-defined review process to ensure consistency and allow the auditor to reach defensible conclusions. An audit evaluates the procedures, operations, and activities performed in the management and execution of a program in orderto verify conformity to established criteria. Such evaluations are intended to provide feedback to management and those responsible for the status of the audited program. 

The laboratory should ensure the establishment of an effective and efficient internal audit process to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the quality management system. The internal audit process provides an independent tool for obtaining objective evidence that the existing requirements have been met, since the internal audit evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of the laboratory. 

Collecting the correct information to monitor and understand performance of the process safety management system, and its separate elements, can provide an unbiased and comprehensive view of system performance. This will alert the appropriate personnel to weaknesses in the process safety system. A companywide versus a site-specific approach to process safety auditing, evaluation, and improvement not only deals with better prioritization of identified improvement work but potentially provides better auditing and evaluation against those conditions that one site may accept as normal/acceptable over time.

There are many terms that various industries use to evaluate their SMS program audit, evaluation, program review, etc. But probably the most descriptive is to conduct a diagnostic of your SMS. As the term diagnostic implies in medicine, the purpose is to determine the health and well-being of an organization s SMS. 

In addition, state and local government are likely to have their own environmental laws. Many states have been delegated authority to administer federal programs. Many local governments building, fire, safety and health codes also have environmental requirements relevant to an audit evaluation. 

Physical audits evaluate the safety of working conditions and identify workplace hazards. First, determine where to conduct the audit. Always communicate with employees working in the area. List items of concern when documenting the audit results. Again, develop a follow-up or corrective action plan and implement it.
