In a survey of atmospheric corrosion in the Canadian arctic and sub-arctic regions rates-as low as 2-5 uva/y were recorded at inland sites . Within 1 km of the sea, rates of 21-34 m/y were measured. [Pg.495]

Solid catalysts for the metathesis reaction are mainly transition metal oxides, carbonyls, or sulfides deposited on high surface area supports (oxides and phosphates). After activation, a wide variety of solid catalysts is effective, for the metathesis of alkenes. Table I (1, 34 38) gives a survey of the more efficient catalysts which have been reported to convert propene into ethene and linear butenes. The most active ones contain rhenium, molybdenum, or tungsten. An outstanding catalyst is rhenium oxide on alumina, which is active under very mild conditions, viz. room temperature and atmospheric pressure, yielding exclusively the primary metathesis products. [Pg.136]

Returning to the simpler form of Eq. (7-40), let us ask first how great the effect of pressure is. A cursory survey of the literature tells us that a reaction having AV = - 5.0 cm3 mol 1 at 298 K is not atypical. Let us calculate the pressure needed to change the rate by a factor of two from its value at atmospheric pressure. In SI units, where atmospheric pressure is 105 N m-2, we have... [Pg.167]

Large amounts of carbon are found in the terrestrial ecosystems and there is a rapid exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, terrestrial biota, and soils. The complexity of the terrestrial ecosystems makes any description of their role in the carbon cycle a crude simplification and we shall only review some of the most important aspects of organic carbon on land. Inventories of the total biomass of terrestrial ecosystems have been made by several researchers, a survey of these is given by Ajtay etal.(1979). [Pg.292]

Endosulfan is a popular pesticide with greenhouse chrysanthemum producers. Surveys of usage patterns and potential exposure were conducted in Ontario (Archibald et al. 1994b). Collection and analysis of a-and P-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in greenhouse air have been described (Vidal et al. 1997). Results indicate that 7.5% of the initial concentration of endosulfan remained in the greenhouse atmosphere 24 hours after application. [Pg.237]

It seems appropriate, therefore, to begin a survey of archaeological materials with a discussion of inorganic materials - from minerals and rocks, the most abundant materials on the planet, to those extracted, derived, or made from them, such as metals and alloys, glass and ceramics (Chapters 1-7). Organic and biological materials produced by, or derived from plants or animals are discussed next (Chapters 8-15). Finally, the atmosphere and the hydrosphere, which make up most of the environment that affects all materials and determines the way they decay, are surveyed (Chapter 17). [Pg.21]

The detector used to measure indoor radon was the latest version of the passive activated carbon device developed at EML (George, 1984 Warner, 1986), which consists of a thin-walled aluminum canister with a screen cover to expose 80 g of carbon to the test atmosphere. Although not as physically rugged as earlier models, properly packed this monitoring device was as successful in conducting the surveys through the mail. [Pg.52]

A survey of investigations on chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes of people exposed to elevated levels of radon in the atmosphere shows non linear dose relationship. At very low doses a sharp increase occured, followed by a plateau. A hypothesis involving DNA repair mechanism is given. [Pg.488]
