Hercules Incorporated. Hercules Incorporated, known as Hercules Powder Co prior to 1966, a diversified, world-wide chemical company with estimated annual sales of about 1 billion in 1973, began its corporate history on October 17, 1912. On that date, a decree of the federal court, under the Sherman Act, ordered the dissolution of the E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company, and a regrouping of the properties into the same company plus two new corporations. Hercules Powder Company and the Atlas Powder Company were the new corporations (Ref 3)...

The Atlas Powder Company s large plant for the manufacture of mannitol and sorbitol by the cathodic reduction of glucose was rendered obsolete within a few years by a high-pressure catalytic hydrogenation process.

Ref Daniel(1902), 32 Atlas Powder Company (APC), Wilmington, Delaware, was organized in 1912 to comply with the decree of US Federal Court dissolving the E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Co into three separate units E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co, Atlas Powder Co and Hercules Powder Co. The name "Atlas was chosen to represent the brand of dynamite which had been assigned to the new Company...

Department of Chemical Engi- Atlas Powder Company... 

The Ordnance Department built a plant at Perryville, Maryland, operated by the Atlas Powder Company, which produced 452,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate per day. Also, the two nitrogen fixation plants at Muscle Shoals and Sheffield, Alabama, were set up to fix nitrogen in the form of ammonium nitrate. 

Tetryl was the main explosive used in boosters and detonators (fuses) for shells, as well as blasting caps. Expanded tetryl production was carried out by the DuPont Powder Company and the Bethlehem Loading Company. The government also built a tetryl plant at Senter, Michigan, operated by the Atlas Powder Company.
