ASTM locked wheel skid tester

The ASTM locked wheel skid tester or the pavement friction tester (PFT) was developed in America and is one of the first pavement surface skid resistance measuring devices. [Pg.726]

The device consists of a trailer with two wheels towed by a suitable vehicle one or both wheels are test wheels. The apparatus contains a transducer (or transducers), instrumentation, a water supply and proper dispensing system and actuation controls for the brake of the test wheel (usually one at time in case both are test wheels). The test wheel is equipped with a standard smooth or ribbed tyre according to ASTM E 524 (2008) or ASTM E 501 (2008), respectively. [Pg.726]

The apparatus shall be of such a design as to provide an equal static load of 4800 65 N to each test wheel. [Pg.726]

The measurements are taken with the test wheel fully locked for a short period (usually 2 s). Readings are taken at regular intervals, usually every 200 m, and at a standard test speed of 65 km/h. [Pg.727]

The measurements can be carried out at ambient temperatures between 4 C and 40 C with the tyre inflation pressure at 165 3 kPa and after 10 km warm-up drive. [Pg.727]
