Aspirin migraine

The combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine is approved in the United States for relieving migraine pain and associated symptoms. [Pg.618]

Aspirin and acetaminophen are also available by prescription in combination with a short-acting barbiturate (butalbital). No randomized, placebo-controlled studies support the efficacy of butalbital-containing formulations for migraine. [Pg.618]

A contact dermatitis occurs infrequently. Because feverfew also inhibits human blood platelet aggregation, interactions are possible with antithrombotic medications such as aspirin or warfarin (Groenewegen and Heptinstall 1990). Abrupt discontinuation of feverfew by people taking it chronically for treatment of migraine can produce rebound withdrawal symptoms. These consist of migraines, anxiety, poor sleep patterns, and stiffness of the muscles and joints. [Pg.323]

Certain foods can trigger a migraine attack by effects on neurotransmitter release or metabolism in the brain. For example, a number of foods contain tryptamine which is known to cause release of other amines (dopamine, noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine) from both nerve terminals and platelets. This release could initiate the sequence of events that results in the migraine attack. Elimination of such foods from the diet can decrease the number of headaches. Compounds that discourage platelet aggregation (e.g. aspirin) may prevent such attacks. [Pg.324]

Any migraine sufferer will willingly testify that this condition has little in common with the headaches to which the rest of mankind are subject. Recent medical studies too have shown fairly conclusively that, whatever the etiology of migraine, it is a condition quite distinct from the common headache. The syndrome is in fact so distinct as to be untouchable by the common headache cures such as aspirin. Drugs for treatment of migraine are unfortunately almost nonexistent. (The lack of appropriate animal models in no small way hinders the search for a treatment.) A... [Pg.1296]

Vomiting and diarrhea from any cause will obviously alter the likelihood of any medication being absorbed. In migraine even before the attack is fully developed and before vomiting has occurred, gastric stasis exists. Taking a prophylactic dose of aspirin or paracetamol is unlikely to be effective if it does not pass the pylorus. Suppository forms of e.g., ergota-mine, have been developed to permit self medication early in the attack. [Pg.155]

Xanthines (usually caffeine) are frequently combined with aspirin in the treatment of headaches. In combination with an ergot derivative, methylxanthines have been used to treat migraine. These effects are likely due to their ability to produce vasoconstriction of cerebral blood vessels. Aminophylline is useful in the rehef of pain due to acute biliary colic. [Pg.352]

The barbiturate butalbital is sold in combination with aspirin or acetaminophen (Fiorinal or Fioricet , respectively) for treatment of migraine and chronic tension headaches. When providing a urine sample, consumption of either of these drugs must be mentioned. [Pg.85]

Caffeine has widespread therapeutic use. It is widely used in headache (migraine) remedies such as aspirin and other analgesics. Caffeine is a mild vasoconstrictor and its ability to constrict blood vessels serving the brain explains its use to relieve headache. Individuals who consume caffeine regularly through medications and food are susceptible to what is known as a rebound headache or caffeine rebound. This occurs when regular caffeine intake is suddenly reduced and the vessels dilate. Caffeine is a common substance in medications to treat apnea in premature infants. Apparently, the area of the brain controlling respiration in premature infants is not fully developed and caffeine helps to stimulate this portion of the... [Pg.57]

Many headache medications also contain caffeine, which can increase the effectiveness of the other drugs that alleviate both tension and migraine headaches. People who get migraines can have their headaches controlled by pills that combine caffeine with aspirin or acetaminophen. A study in 2000 showed that the effect of caffeine also increases the effectiveness of ibuprofen. [Pg.85]

Aspirin and other salicylates are used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain. Aspirin is commonly used to treat headache (including migraine and tension type) and to decrease elevated body temperature. Salicylic acid, as a 10% to 20% solution in alcohol or propylene glycol, is used for the treatment of corns. [Pg.276]

Excedrin Migraine was the first migraine medication to be sold over the counter. It consists of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. [Pg.68]

Antiinflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, naproxen, and meclofenamate are useful in relieving migraine attack. [Pg.438]

Analgesics Analgesics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often effective in mild-to-moderate migraine. Aspirin, acetaminophen, naproxen, propoxyphene, acetaminophen with butalbital, and caffeine are all effective in treating a migraine attack. [Pg.439]

Lipton RB. Efficacy and safety of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine in alleviating migraine headache pain. Arch Neurol 1998 55 210-217. [Pg.112]

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are helpful for early and mild headache. NSAIDs include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, and others. A recent study concluded that a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine could effectively relieve symptoms for many migraine patients. One such over-the-counter preparation is available as Exedrin Migraine. [Pg.346]
