Soil. Composting of soils contaminated by high explosives is being carried out at the Umatilla Army Depot near Hermiston, Oregon (70). Soil from munitions washout lagoons is being treated iadoors ia compost rows of 2,000 m, and the estimated cost is less than one-third the estimated cost of iaciaeration. If this is successful, there are 30 similar sites on the National Priority List that could be treated ia a similar way. [Pg.36]

The formation of the Ordnance Department resulted from four events following cessation of hostilities in 1784. In 1785, the Secretary of War was charged with taking into his care all military stores, equipment, and supplies of the US Army. Second, a Surveyor of Ordnance was authorized in 1789. Third, Congress provided for the erection and repair of magazines and arsenals, and for the establishment of national armories. Fourth, in 1795, a Purveyor of Public Supplies was appointed to conduct the procurement of all military and naval stores necessary for the service of the USA. The Third Army had not fought on paper, they were short of file cabinets and folders. To salvage these, they tossed away vital Farben evidence. More than a hundred tons of records lay dispersed over an area larger than a city block when the Bernstein investigators came down from Berlin Northwest 7. [Pg.41]

Isolation Procedures Once a victim of chemical or biological agents or weapons gets to the hospital or another healthcare facility, that person may have to abide by patient isolation procedures. These include Standard Precautions, Airborne Precautions, Droplet Precautions, and Contact Precautions. These precautions are spelled out in the third edition of Medical Management Of Biological Casualties Handbook published by the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease located at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. [Pg.75]

Performance tests consisted of loading DBX-1 as a transfer charge in U.S. Army M55 stab detonators. Standard M55 detonators consist of three separate explosive layers, pressed sequentially into a metal detonator cup as shown in Figure 6. The first layer is 15 mg of the stab initiation mix (NOL-130) it is a combination of lead azide, lead styphnate, barium nitrate, antimony sulfide, and tetrazene [l-(5-tetrazolyl)-3-guanyltetra-zene hydrate], pressed at 70,000 psi. The second layer is 51 mg of transfer charge, lead azide, pressed at 10,000 psi. Lastly, the third layer is 19 mg of output charge, RDX, pressed at 15,000 psi. [Pg.5]

This is one of the most widely used thermochemical databases for inorganic compounds. The first and second editions of JANAF (Joint Army, Navy and Air Force) Tables date from 1964 and 1971, respectively. Supplements of the latter were released in 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1982. The third edition was published in 1985. [Pg.277]
