Sa.Ia.rs and Lakes. Brines having high lithium concentration are found in salars of northern Chile, southwestern Bohvia, and northwestern Argentina. Brines of lower lithium concentration are found in salars in the western United States and the Tibetan Plateau. Brines pumped from beneath the surface of the Salar de Atacama (Chile) and Silver Peak (Clayton Valley, Nevada) are used for commercial production of lithium uti1i2ing solar evaporation (see Chemicals frombrines). The concentration of selected ions in brines from salars and lakes of potential commercial interest worldwide are shown in Table 1. [Pg.221]

Krameria L. consists of 15 (Mabberley, 1997, p. 383) or about 17 species (Simpson et al., 1979), with a disjunct distribution between central United States (Kansas) and northern Argentina to Chile. Two reports of lipids from flower glands of several species representing both regions have been published, the North American members by Seigler et al. [Pg.291]

All the studies summarized in this chapter were carried out in the province of Salta, in northern Argentina, with the exception of case n, which was developed in the province of Jujuy. The province of Salta has an area of 155,500 km2, occupying the sixth position at the national level, and with a value similar to the surface of Nepal, has a population of 1.2 million, making it the eighth most populous out of 23 at the national level. [Pg.59]

South America has two major areas, separated by the Andes Mountain ridges, where arid and semi-arid zones dominate. In the barren, coastal Atacama desert of Peru and northern Chile, precipitation is extremely limited and comes as winter mists or drizzles. In the rain shadow east of the Andes in Argentina, arid zones are widespread. South America apparently has only a slightly greater proportion of dry zones than North America. [Pg.18]

Nicotiana tabacum originated from the borders of Argentina and Bolivia. It has been cultivated in pre-Columbian times in the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, and the northern region of South America. It is now found worldwide as a cultivated crop. [Pg.272]

Grassland occupies vast areas of the western and central parts of North America, central and southern Russia, northern China, Argentina, and the inside southern Australia. [Pg.27]

Caliche or Nitre- Bed. A term used in Chile for a layer of gravel or rocks contg Na nitrate (Chile saltpeter) together with Na sulfate (salt cake), Na chloride (table salt) small amts of other salts. Caliche varies in depth from 2 to 20ft and is covered by 1 to 12ft of sand overburden. The deposits are found in a desert in Atacama of province Tarapaca (Northern Chile) extending 400 miles north and south with a width of 5 to 40 miles. Deposits of Na nitrate, on a smaller scale have been found in Argentina, Bolivia, California and Peru (Ref 1, 2 3)... [Pg.403]

Flax is grown mainly to produce linseed oil for industrial applications, Western Canada, China and India being leading producers. Other important areas of production are the Northern Plains of the USA (Maddock et al., 2005), Argentina, the former USSR and Uruguay. Flax is grown typically under dryland conditions. In Canada, flax is produced only as an industrial oilseed crop and not for textile use as in some countries. [Pg.105]

Another growing area for Anadenanthera is slightly smaller and centers in northern Argentina, where the seed snuff is known as cibil. Three species native to southern Peru and Bolivia—A. macrocarpa, A. excels a and A. colubrma—are the source of vilca and huilca. All four Anadenanthera species seem to be used in making snuffs, usually without other plant additives. [Pg.410]

The question of whether variations in content in wood samples taken from western North America can be used to document worldwide secular variations in radiocarbon values seemingly has been answered by studies of the concentrations in tree rings from Patagonia, Argentina, Canada, and Europe. The maximum contemporaneous deviation noted was between the southern and northern hemisphere, but it did not exceed... [Pg.49]
