Applications of Operations Research

Optimization The application of operations research tools to a supply chain function. Examples include distribution planning (warehouse location and transportation planning) and planning a scheduling production. Optimization technology applies in complex supply chains and when the potential for improvement justifies its use. [Pg.540]

In addition to the case studies we discussed in Section 5.5, a number of real-world applications in supply chain management are available in the Interfaces journal. Interfaces is published bi-monthly, by the institute cf operations research and management science (INFORMS). Each issue contains real applications of Operations Research models in practice. Supply chain management applications appear frequently in this journal. [Pg.282]

There is by now a huge literature on the applications of operations research in container operations (cf Steenken et al. (2004)). To the best of our knowledge, while there are sporadic papers that address the static berth allocation planning problem, none of the papers in the literature addresses specifieally the issue of throughput loss in the dynamic berth planning... [Pg.74]

Fig. 5-2. we shall discuss at some length in this section. This problem is applicable to operations research, and, hence, we give a brief outline of maximum flow through networks. [Pg.256]

This chapter introduces the reader to elementary concepts of modeling, generic formulations for nonlinear and mixed integer optimization models, and provides some illustrative applications. Section 1.1 presents the definition and key elements of mathematical models and discusses the characteristics of optimization models. Section 1.2 outlines the mathematical structure of nonlinear and mixed integer optimization problems which represent the primary focus in this book. Section 1.3 illustrates applications of nonlinear and mixed integer optimization that arise in chemical process design of separation systems, batch process operations, and facility location/allocation problems of operations research. Finally, section 1.4 provides an outline of the three main parts of this book. [Pg.3]

With the exceptions noted below, this publication is applicable to any type of operating research reactor. It may also be applied to critical and subcritical assemblies (hereafter both included under the term research reactor) to the extent that is appropriate for these facilities. [Pg.8]

Another perspective of organization produced the sociocultural model. It has evolved from a systems inquiry of the organization as mechanical system, but with interdependent variables, and came later in the twentieth century with the application of the mathematics of Operations Research (OR) to find optimal solutions to networks of interdependent variables. Academics like Ackoff and Forrester (systems dynamic modeling) [28] and practitioners like McNamara [29] contributed to this mode of inquiry. Eventually Ackoff [30] would renounce the OR approach because it didn t consider that the parts in a social system have a choice. [Pg.60]
