Alkaline manganese batteries are a direct competitor to the standard carbon-zinc (Leclanch6) battery over which, in certain applications, they enjoy advantages in performance. The primary alkaline manganese battery, which first became available in 1960, represents a major advance over the standard carbon-zinc battery and meets the growing need for a high-rate source of electiical energy. [Pg.140]

The demand for electrically operated tools or devices that can be handled independently of stationary power sources led to a variety of different battery systems which are chosen depending on the field of application. In the case of rare usage, e.g., for household electric torches or for long-term applications with low current consumption, such as watches or heart pacemakers, primary cells (zinc-carbon, alkaline-manganese or lithium-iodide cells) are chosen. For many applications such as starter batteries in cars, only rechargeable battery systems, e.g., lead accumulators, are reasonable with regard to costs and the environment. [Pg.15]

The prominent role of alkyl halides in formation of carbon-carbon bonds by nucleophilic substitution was evident in Chapter 1. The most common precursors for alkyl halides are the corresponding alcohols, and a variety of procedures have been developed for this transformation. The choice of an appropriate reagent is usually dictated by the sensitivity of the alcohol and any other functional groups present in the molecule. Unsubstituted primary alcohols can be converted to bromides with hot concentrated hydrobromic acid.4 Alkyl chlorides can be prepared by reaction of primary alcohols with hydrochloric acid-zinc chloride.5 These reactions proceed by an SN2 mechanism, and elimination and rearrangements are not a problem for primary alcohols. Reactions with tertiary alcohols proceed by an SN1 mechanism so these reactions are preparatively useful only when the carbocation intermediate is unlikely to give rise to rearranged product.6 Because of the harsh conditions, these procedures are only applicable to very acid-stable molecules. [Pg.142]

Zinc-Carbon Battery. The Leclanche or zinc-carbon dry cell battery has existed for over 100 years and had been the most widely used of all the dry cell batteries because of its low cost, relatively good performance, and ready availability. Cells and batteries of many sizes and characteristics have been manufactured to meet the requirements of a wide variety of applications. Significant improvements in capacity and shelf life were made with this battery system in the period between 1945 and 1965 through the use of new materials (such as beneficiated manganese dioxide and zinc chloride electrolyte) and cell designs (such as the paper-lined cell). The low cost of the Leclanchd battery is a major attraction, but it has lost considerable market share, except in the developing countries, because of the newer primary batteries with superior performance characteristics. [Pg.166]
