Application programming interface design

Individual application components are designed and built down to the level of programming language interfaces and classes or preexisting components, or to a point where the implementation can be mechanically generated from the detailed design.

Therefore, new applications, such as those developed in the scope of IMPROVE, try to adapt to these guidelines and to use standardized symbols and functions. In this manner, the software system should be familiar to the user. Furthermore, the programming effort can be reduced. 

Pulse Sequences. - A cross-platform development environment for NMR experiments (ODIN-Object-oriented Development INterface) was presented. It allows rapid prototyping of new pulse sequences and provides a common programming interface for different system types. With this object-oriented interface, the programmer is capable of writing applications to control an experiment that can be executed on different measurement devices, even from different manufacturers, without the need to modify the source code. Due to the clear design of the software, new pulse sequences can be created, tested, and executed within a short time. The software focuses mainly on NMR imaging, but can also be used with limitations for spectroscopic experiments. 

Chemists use computers for many purposes. As the previous sections on instrumental methods have illustrated, every modem analytical instrument must include a computer interface. Chemical structure drawing, visualization, and modeling programs are important computer-supported applications required in academic, industrial, and governmental educational and research enterprises. Computational chemistry has allowed practicing chemists to predict molecular structures of known and theoretical compounds and to design and test new compounds on computers rather than at the laboratory bench.
