Appetite atherosclerosis

Q2 In addition to poor memory, factors which suggest a diagnosis of hypothyroidism include cold intolerance, cold extremities, slowed reflexes, low resting heart rate, slow thought processes, depression and sleepiness/lack of energy, appetite suppression associated with weight gain and raised blood lipids, which may lead to increased atherosclerosis. [Pg.146]

Uses for the herb have included high and low blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, and angina pectoris (1). Hawthorn is also purported to have spasmolytic and sedative effects (1). Native Americans used it as a diuretic for kidney and bladder disorders and to treat stomach aches, stimulate appetite, and improve circulation (4). The flowers and berries have... [Pg.203]

An abundance of food has obvious consequences it promotes our specific appetites. Lipids account for about 40% of the calories ingested in Western countries, whereas nutritional recommendations are 5-10% lower. This excessive lipid intake, associated with a qualitative imbalance (excess of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, too high to6/to3 ratio) strongly favours the development of obesity and associated diseases (atherosclerosis, non insulin-dependent diabetes, hypertension, cancer). This attraction to fatty foods is not specific to humans. Rats and mice spontaneously prefer lipid-rich foods if provided with a free choice (Tsuruta et al. 1999 Takeda et al. 2000). This attraction to lipids is so strong that mice given free access to an oil as an optional diet rapidly become obese (Takeda et al. 2001a). The origin of this preference for lipids remains unclear. [Pg.233]

Introduction - This review will present recent developments on the etiology and treatment of atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia and cholelithiasis. The other major lipid disorder, obesity, has recently been reviewed as to pathogenesis and treatment,1 new efficacy trials and mechanism of action studies on anorectic agents,2 5 and appetite regulation in normal and abnormal states.3 6... [Pg.191]

In moderate amounts, alcohol has an appetite-stimulating effect, and may also help the social aspect of meals. Furthermore, there is good epidemiological evidence that modest consumption of alcohol is protective against atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. However, alcohol has harmful effects in excess, not only in the short term, when drunkenness may have undesirable consequences, but also in the longer term. [Pg.210]
