Apparel industry types

Sizing is not standardized in the apparel industry, but is one of the main concerns for consumers and the manufacmrers. Several products that are stated to be the same size are compared in each area of the important dimensions (chest, waist, sleeve length, etc.) for conformance to a company s stated size requirements. Fit is related to size, but the same garment can fit differentiy on different body types. Live models or mannequins are used to see how the same garment fits on different shapes. 

Second behind packaging in the United States is the use of polymers in fiber and fiberfill applications that encompass the apparel, sports equipment, building and construction, electronic, furniture and furnishings, and industrial/machinery markets. In 1998, 4.8 million metric t of manufactured fiber was produced for use in traditional consumer products such as apparel, carpets, upholstered furniture, and bedding as well as in high-tech applications such as composite materials, medical devices, and electronic circuit boards (17). The resultant fabrics are unique in that they have many functional property improvements thermal adaptability due to the phase change nature of the bound polyol, durable press or resiliency, soil release, reduction of static charge, antimicrobial activity, enhanced hydrophilicity and improved flex life, and resistance to pilling. Because of the different molecular weights of polyols, resins, acid catalysts, and fabric constructions, there are numerous modified fabrics that can be produced with sets of improved attributes. Each fabric must be carefully evaluated for optimum curing conditions and formulations to produce the desired product. Several licenses have been granted for this process. Various types of apparel, healthcare items, and industrial fabrics are currently evaluated for commercial production [381,382].

Polyethylene terephthalate polyester is the leading man-made fiber in production volume and owes its popularity to its versatility alone or as a blended fiber in textile structures. When the term "polyester" is used, it refers to this generic type. It is used extensively in woven and knitted apparel, home furnishings, and industrial appl ications. Modification of the molecular structure of the fiber through texturizing and or chemical finishing extends its usefulness in various applications. Polyester is expected to surpass cotton as the major commodity fiber in the future.
