Some hydroxamic acids of the isoxazole series also display a marked antituberculosis activity. Viomycin was obtained independently and simultaneously by two different laboratories from actinomycetes designated as Streptomyces pmiceus and Streptomyces Jloridae. Later another antibiotic with pronounced antituberculosis activity in experimental infections was isolated from Streptomyces vinaceus and called vinactane . Subsequently it was proved to be identical to viomycin .

Documented effects In vitro, ethanolic extracts of the plant showed low to moderate cytotoxic activity in human lympho-blastoid Raji cells (Spiridonov et al. 2005). Rubiadin exhibited antifungal and antituberculosis activity, as well as cytotoxicity to BC and NCI-H187 cancer cell lines (Kanokmedhakul et al. 2005). Iron-containing pharmaceutical compounds are used and developed as anticancer and antibiotic drugs as well as for treatment of iron deficiency.
