Antidote for poisons

Because of its extreme insolubiUty, barium sulfate is not toxic the usual antidote for poisonous barium compounds is to convert them to barium sulfate by administering sodium or magnesium sulfate. In medicine, barium sulfate is widely used as an x-ray contrast medium (see Imaging TECHNOLOGY X-RAY technology). It is also used in photographic papers, filler for plastics, and in concrete as a radiation shield. Commercially, barium sulfate is sold both as natural barite ore and as a precipitated product. Blanc fixe is also used in making white sidewall mbber tires or in other mbber appHcations. 

Administration of chloroform to laboratory animals resulted in the depletion of renal GSH, indicating that GSH reacts with reactive intermediates, thus reducing the kidney damage otherwise caused by the reaction of these intermediates with tissue MMBs (Hook and Smith 1985 Smith and Hook 1983, 1984 Smith et al. 1984). Similarly, chloroform treatment resulted in the depletion of hepatic GSH and alkylation of MMBs (Docks and Krishna 1976). Other studies demonstrated that sulfhydryl compounds such as L-cysteine (Bailie et al. 1984) and reduced GSH (Kluwe and Hook 1981) may provide protection against nephrotoxicity induced by chloroform. The sulfhydryl compound N-acetylcysteine is an effective antidote for poisoning by acetaminophen, which, like chloroform, depletes GSH and produces toxicity by reactive intermediates. 

Atropine is often used for colds for temporarily draining the nasopharynx. Atropine is also used in combination with other drugs as an antidote for poisonous anticholinesterase agents such as organophosphorous insecticides and neuroparalytic gases, hi such situations, atropine removes or balances toxicities that are a result of a high concentration of acetylcholine. 

Antidotes for poisoning by cholinergic drugs Atropine is used for poisoning by organophosphorus insecticides, chemical warfare nerve gases, and as an antidote for mushroom poisoning caused by muscarine in certain species, such as Amanita muscaria.

Fortunately, there is an antidote for poisoning with this substance, and the treatment can be very effective.

There is no specific antidote for poisoning. If the acute toxic effect is survived, recovery will be uneventful.
