Inhibition of immune hemolysis by berberine was described by Tanaka (505). Subcutaneous or intravenous injections of berberine either in single doses or repeatedly did not affect the number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and the hemoglobin level of intact rabbits (506). In rabbits, with anemia induced by phenylhydrazine and toluenedia-mine, berberine had an antianemic effect. Hasegawa and Tanaka (507) did not observe any effect of berberine on the production of plasma cells. It decreased the anticoagulant action of heparin in dog and human blood in vitro (508). Morthland (509) carried out a spectrophotometric study of the interaction of nucleic acids with aminoacridine or with other basic stains including berberine. [Pg.234]

The isolation in the 1940s of the antianemic factor now known as folic acid and its subsequent synthesis resulted, after many false leads, in the first successful antivitamin antimetabolite aminopterin (Table 4-5). This compound produced sustained remissions in leukemia. The N10-methyl homolog, now designated as MTX (Table 4-5), superseded aminopterin the same year. It is still the only clinically significant antifolate carcinolytic drug. [Pg.117]

Epoetin alfa, a glycoprotein with antianemic effects (50 to 100 units/kg three times weekly), is used to treat anemia associated with chronic renal failure and anemia related to zidovudine therapy in patients infected with HIV (see Figures 46 and 47). [Pg.233]

THERAP CAT Antidote to folic acid antagonists antianemic (folate deficiency). [Pg.661]

Castle s intrinsic factor a substance produced by the stomach which combines with the extrinsic factor (vitamin B12) in food to yield an antianemic principle, its lack is believed to cause pernicious anemia cation exchange capacity a measure of the capability of a substance or a (solid) material to bind cations in a reversible marmer CCP see CCPAES... [Pg.1679]
