The uniformity of phosphate films is influenced by the surface condition of the base metal and the nucleation of phosphates. Carbonaceous residues on steel surfaces resulting from rolling lubricants during the annealing of steels have an effect on the corrosion performance of paint-phosphate-coated steels. The porosity of a phosphate film is increased as a result of carbon contamination on the steel surface, which promotes the formation of defects in the film. [Pg.94]

Furnaces. Titanium ustially is annealed or stress relieved in conventional furnaces constructed for annealing of steel. These furnaces are electric, gas fired, or oil fired, in order of decreasing popularity. The temperatxire-control equipment for these operations should have an accuracy of 5.5 °C ( 10 °F) and should be capable of controlling and recording the desired temperature within 14 °C ( 25 °F), except where tighter controls are required by the heat treatment specification in use. Some specifications require control of the aging temperature to 5.5°C( 10°F). [Pg.731]

Structural Properties at Low Temperatures It is most convenient to classify metals by their lattice symmetiy for low temperature mechanical properties considerations. The face-centered-cubic (fee) metals and their alloys are most often used in the construc tion of cryogenic equipment. Al, Cu Ni, their alloys, and the austenitic stainless steels of the 18-8 type are fee and do not exhibit an impact duc tile-to-brittle transition at low temperatures. As a general nile, the mechanical properties of these metals with the exception of 2024-T4 aluminum, improve as the temperature is reduced. Since annealing of these metals and alloys can affect both the ultimate and yield strengths, care must be exercised under these conditions. [Pg.1127]

In natural waters, cold-worked commercial carbon steels of the same composition corrode at more or less the same rate as annealed steels, presumably because the corrosion rate in this case is controlled by the diffusion of oxygen. Unprotected carbon steels are sometimes exposed to natural waters, and it is this latter situation which is of greater practical importance than the behaviour of steels in acids, since steels should never be used in these environments unless they are protected. [Pg.39]

On cooling to room temperature after annealing, maraging steels transform completely to martensite. The as-annealed structure consists of packets of parallel lath-like martensite platelets arranged within a network of prior-austenite grain boundaries. The platelets have a high dislocation density but are not twinned. [Pg.563]

Chromium is the most effective addition to improve the resistance of steels to corrosion and oxidation ar elevated temperatures, and Ihe chromium—molybdenum steels are an important class of alloys for use in steam power plants, petroleum refineries, and chemical-process equipment. The chromium content in these steels varies from 0.5 to Ill s. As a group, the low carbon chromium—molybdenum steels huve similar creep—rupture strengths, regardless of the chromium content, hut corrosion and oxidation resistance increase progressively vvith chromium content. Most of the chromium — molybdenum steels are used in the annealed or in the normalised and tempered condition some ol the modified grades have better properties in the quench and tempered condition. [Pg.775]
