The problem of surface sensitivity could be overcome to a certain extent by using grazing angle incidence, however, the refractive indices of solids in... [Pg.137]

Bedzyk and co-workers used the XSW technique to probe the ion distribution in the electrolyte above a charged cross-linked phospholipid membrane adsorbed onto a silicon-tungsten layered synthetic microstructure (LSM) as shown in Figure 2.80(a). Melendres et ai (1991) reported the in-situ study of the electrode/oxide and oxide/electrolyte interfaces for a copper electrode in pH 8.4 borate buffer under potential control. The grazing-angle incidence arrangement employed by the authors is shown in Figure 2.81(a) and a cyclic voltammogram of the Cu electrode in the buffer is shown in Figure 2.81(b). [Pg.157]

A simple and practical way to achieve the field enhancement is to use backside illumination of a dielectric plate, for instance a cover glass, in a standard DLW geometry with an oil-immersion focusing lens. According to the Fresnel formulas for the right angle incidence (0, = 0°), the coefficients of the in-plane ( ) polarized amphtudes of transmitted and reflected electric fields are, respectively ... [Pg.176]

In all these matrix quantities the first index refers to the final and the second to the initial channel, i and j denote reactant and product channels, respectively, and Q denotes solid angle da /dQ = (scattered particle current per solid angle)/(incident particle current per area). Elastic scattering implies i = j. Both I and ajt depend on the total energy of relative motion, and may be written Iji(E) and (Jji(E). [Pg.56]

The in-situ near-normal external reflection results on adsorption of cadmium ions to mixed monolayers are given in Fig. 2b. Since the background spectra are taken for the close-packed mixed monolayers on pure water at each composition, the methylene stretching bands are nearly cancelled out. By contrast, the asymmetric carboxylate band appears with reasonable S/N ratios even without a polarizer-modulator set-up [7], It is noted that the near-normal incidence of the infrared beam resulted in negative signals on the contrary to that of the grazing-angle incidence. [Pg.256]

For much thinner films, such as monolayers, the more specialized technique of grazing-angle incidence reflection-absorption is used. [Pg.2241]

With this measurement, the inclination of the endplate of the sacrum with respect to a horizontal line is precisely defined. The summation of the angles of the sacro-femoral tilt and the sacral slope determines the incidence angle. Incidence is considered a morphologically unchangeable parameter (Fig. 6b). [Pg.113]

Some samples, such as thin films on substrates, are very difficult to measure by ATR infrared spectrometry. With much attention to semiconductor production and quality control, it has been found by Milosevic et al. [3] and Mulcahy et al. [4] that ATR can be used to measure monolayers on a silicon or metal substrate if the ATR measurement is made when the angle of incidence is near grazing. They showed that absorbance is actually enhanced for thin films on silicon at or near grazing-angle incidence when compared to thin films placed directly on the IRE. The spectrum of an organic monolayer on a silicon wafer is shown in Figure 15.19. An... [Pg.341]

An extensive study has focused on terpenes with structures related to pinane, camphor [8], and limonene [9]. The in-phase dual circular polarization (DCPj) ROA spectra and the normalized CIDs are presented for fourteen compounds. Correlations between ROA features and structural elements of the molecules are discussed. The study clearly demonstrates the advantage of the backscattering measurements, which for theoretical reasons should be about three times as intensive as the normal right-angle incident circular polarization (ICP) measurements. [Pg.793]

For radars looking under low grazing angle incidence towards the sea surface the meteorological conditions can result in different propagation mechanisms. [Pg.88]

Further, two thick rigid polarizing films spoil device flexibility to be unnecessary. Therefore, guest-host twisted liquid crystal devices with dichroic dyes [7] were fabricated to absorb the all-polarization-angle incident light. In this device, a nematic liquid crystal with low birefringence is introduced, and optical rotation effect is suppressed in the twisted liquid crystal layer. The contrast ratio of the display is inferior, but the guest-host nematic liquid crystal of twist orientation is suitable for simple text display. [Pg.217]
