Monolayer measurements and film deposition A computer-controlled Langmuir type film balance (LT-102, Belarus) was used for 7t-A isotherm recording and LB film deposition by horizontal precipitation (HP) method. Silicon with native silicon dioxide layer and atomically flat mica surfaces were used for monolayer film deposition. [Pg.350]

Deposition of a monolayer film of 3S at 20 mN/m surface pressure on a silicon wafer was achieved by z-type with transfer efficiency consistently in the range of about 0.5-0.6 (Figure 2). Such low transfer may imply that the hyperbranched polymer can be squeezed under compression, through either conformational change or intercalation. The overcompression could be relieved by transfer onto a solid substrate where the molecule occupies an area larger than on the water/air interface. The thickness of the deposited monolayer measured by ellipsometry was about 32A for the first few layers, but this number declined slowly as the number of depositions increased. The homogeneity of the film, judged from the standard deviation of the film thickness, also deteriorated. The... [Pg.136]

Furthermore, monolayer measurements demonstrate the variation of the dipole moment of peripheral proteins under stretching or compression. According to us, this implies the possibility of bimorph flexoelectricity of peripheral proteins (an analogue of the piezoelectricity of a bimorph plate), especially if these are symmetrically adsorbed over the two membrane interfaces, as suggested in the Danielli-Davson model. ... [Pg.186]

Several years ago Seljelid et al. showed that poly(L-Lys) enhanced the uptake of H-labelled reovirus double-stranded RNA by macrophages and similarly it has been shown that poly(L-Lys), poly(D-Lys) and poly(L-omithine) markedly increase the rate of uptake of I-labelled albumin by Sarcoma S-180 cells grown in mono-layer In the latter experiments, Ryser found that the ability to stimulate uptake is clearly related to the molecular size of the polymer used. Recently, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-poly(L-Lys) conjugate was prepared and used to determine uptake by L-929 mouse fibroblasts grown as monolayers Measurements of the enzymatic... [Pg.83]

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the oxygen-rich cavity resides at the outer interface and that the sulfur atoms are located near the gold surface. The thickness of the monolayers, measured by surface plasmon spectroscopy is 22( 2) A for 8a and 8c, and 24( 2) A for 8b, which is in accordance with the expected values. Electrochemical measurements show that the heterogenous electron transfer between a gold electrode covered with a monolayer of 8a and a 1 mM 0.1 M K2SO4... [Pg.561]

First experiments investigating the action of phospholipase A2 on mixed membrane systems have been carried out in monolayers measuring the area contraction under constant surface pressure vs. time. Cytochrome c can be strongly adsorbed in its native state on tin oxide electrodes at coverages of several tenths of a monolayer. Measurements of unimolecular electron transfer rate constants for adsorbed cytochrome c can be readily made in the absence of solution cytochrome c using cyclic voltammetry. The kinetic results are consistent with an interfacial model involving electrostatic interaction between the tin oxide and the exposed heme edge of the cytochrome as well as an electrostatically driven adsorbate reorientation capability to account for the anomalous dependence of rate constant on scan rate. Other possible explanations for the... [Pg.73]
