Angel funding

The Environmental Defense Fund and Regional Institute of Southern California sponsored comprehensive modeling studies of pricing on transportation behavior for the Los Angeles area. The findings are as follows ... 

James R. Heath, of the University of California, Los Angeles, discussed molecular electronics as a prototypical hot topic, exemplifying the kind of early-stage technology that has extraordinary commercial potential but lacks sufficient certainty to attract development funding. He presented a vision for developing commercially valuable nano-level computers that was in sharp contrast to the reality of limited venture capital or governmental aid available to develop the field.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District, the air-pollution watchdog agency for the Los Angeles basin, funded a study to look at fuel cell locomotives as a means of reducing pollution.

This book is a result of many hours of effort by many people. We thank all of them for their time and concern for this project. The biotechnology industry had its share of major R D and clinical trial success. The big gains for biotech products are mainly in anemia cancer TNF alpha inhibitors human insulin with short, mixed, and long duration of action interferon for multiple sclerosis and hepatitis C monoclonal antibodies for cancer RSV and immuno-inflammatory diseases. This success has resulted in attracting top pharmaceutical companies and R D funds for biosimilar products with improved properties. It is easier for start-up companies in the above areas to attract capital and angel investors or to conclude licensing deals and find marketing partners. 

The history of neural networks, at least in its popular version, has its angels and demons. One of them is Marvin Minsky, referred to as the devil. Minsky and Papert wrote a book entitled Perceptrons (1969) in which they showed, among other things, some of the limitations of the neural networks that were popular at the time. This was interpreted by some as a very restrictive limit on all kinds of neural networks and it was interpreted by some as being the end of an era of funding for the then popular neural networks in order to make room for the more classical AI approadies promoted by Minsky and others. 

As a high school student my goal was to go on to the University of California at Los Angeles — ucla. I succeeded, and it could not have been a better experience. It was there that I was guided to premed courses. I would, years later, come hack to ucla to teach and to continue my research on the impact of the atomic bomb on the children of Nagasaki. To this day I remain deeply impressed with the quality of education offered at this great state-funded institution.
