There are numerous methods available to identify the potential for chemicals to cause both healtli conditions and adverse effects on tlie eiiviroiiment. These can include, but are not limited to, toxicology, epidemiology, molecular and atomic structural analysis, MSDS sheets, engineering approaches to problem solving, fate of chemicals, and carcinogenic versus non-carcinogenic healtli hazards... 

Since the main topic of this review is STM imaging, growth properties, surface morphology, and atomic structures of oxide nanosystems are the central themes. Oxide nanolayers on noble metal surfaces often display very complex structural arrangements, as illustrated in the following sections. The determination of the surface structure of a complex oxide nanophase by STM methods is, however, by no means trivial resolution at the atomic scale in STM is a necessary but not sufficient condition for elucidating the atomic structure of an oxide nanophase. Chemists have synthesized a spectacular array of submicron- and nano-particles with well-defined size and atomic structure and very special properties. Examples include CdSe quantum dots and novel spheres and rods. Transport enters the picture via fundamental studies of the physical processes that affect the synthesis, which must be understood for even modest scale-up from the milligram level. Likewise, processes for assembling fascinating face-centered-cubic crystals or ordered multilayers must concentrate on organizing the particles via flow, diffusion, or action of external fields. Near-perfection is possible but requires careful understanding and control of the forces and the rates.

Atomic-beam diffraction was first demonstrated in 1930, as a verification of the concept of the de Broglie wave (Estermann and Stem, 1930). In the 1970s, it was developed into an extremely informative method for determining topography and atomic structure of solid surfaces (Steele, 1974 Goodman and Wachman, 1976).

There are many excellent books and reviews on the structure and reactions of secondary radical ions generated in radiolytic and photolytic reactions. Common topics include the means and kinetics of radical ion production, techniques for matrix stabilization, electronic and atomic structure, ion-molecule reactions, structural rearrangements, etc. On the other hand, the studies of primary radical ions, viz. solvent radical ions, have not been reviewed in a systematic fashion. In this chapter, we attempt to close this gap. To this end, we will concentrate on a few better-characterized systems. (There have been many scattered pulse radiolysis studies of organic solvents most of these studies are inconclusive as to the nature of the primary species.)...
