Anatomic retention

Amalgam restorations are prepared by mixing a powdered alloy with mercury to form a plastic moldable mass that is packed or condensed iato the prepared cavity. The cavity is designed to provide mechanical retention, maximum marginal mass, support to absorb the functional stresses transmitted through the restoration, and maximum protection to the remaining tooth stmcture. The restoration reestabUshes the normal tooth anatomical form and function. [Pg.482]

By definition, learning is the acquisition of new information, whereas memory is the retention of acquired information. Driven by knowledge obtained by scientists before them, various disciples of neuroscience over the course of the past 100 years have learned more about various components of learning and memory, whether at the molecular level of synapses or at the systems level of brain circuitry. The concept of memory of mind has existed since the time of Aristotle. It is only during the past 50 years or so that scientists have begun to unravel some of the anatomical and cellular bases underlying such a complex mental process. [Pg.859]

Comparative Toxicokinetics. Available data Ifom ehronic rat inhalation bioassays show similar asbestos-induced respiratory effects to those in humans assoeiated with oeeupational exposure to asbestos (pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, and pleural mesothelioma), but the use of the rat data to predict human health risks from exposure to airborne asbestos has a number of areas of uneertainty, including those associated with interspecies differences in lifespan, airway morphometry, and breathing patterns. The development of rat and human lung retention models that incorporate species differences in anatomical and physiological parameters influencing deposition and clearance of asbestos fibers may decrease the... [Pg.149]

Urinary frequency, urgency and incontinence flavoxate, tolterodine, oxybutynin (antimuscarinics) may be useful they may cause retention of urine if there is anatomical obstruction. The pain (with reflex muscle spasm) of an indwelling catheter may be alleviated by diazepam. [Pg.332]

Finally, physiological and anatomical differences can impact excretion. For example, the kangaroo rat lives in the desert yet requires no water to survive because its kidneys are extremely efficient at reabsorbing chemicals. However, this could also lead to increased retention of toxic chemicals, which could increase the toxicity of a chemical relative to other species. These issues are more specifically discussed below. [Pg.85]
