Analysis of Case Studies

In some cases standardisation (or closely related scaling) is an essential first step in data analysis. In case study 2, each type of chromatographic measurement is on a different scale. For example, the N values may exceed 10 000, whereas k rarely exceeds 2. If these two types of information were not standardised, PCA will be dominated primarily by changes in N, hence all analysis of case study 2 in this chapter involves preprocessing via standardisation. Standardisation is also useful in areas such as quantitative structure-property relationships, where many different pieces of information are measured on very different scales, such as bond lengths and dipoles. 

Use of Case Studies. Case studies are a particularly effective way of meeting the course objectives. Case studies also serve as examples, good and bad, of how a problem can be handled. Critical analysis of case studies helps develop the student s ability to detect flawed reasoning, weaknesses in logic, and inappropriate interpretation of facts and events. There are three good sources of case studies, as explained in Sections 0.2.1.2.1-0.2.1.2.3.

All expert systems depend on expert elicitation and two main approaches are used. Firstly, based on the assumption that experts can articulate their knowledge, a programme of interviewing is carried out. This approach is prone to error as experts are often better at doing than analysing why. The second approach, knowledge induction, relies on second party analysis of case studies that the expert has worked on and is often preferred.

To gather information about the factors which contributed to the above incident, interviews were held with the workers and their management. Relevant documentation such as standard operating procedures and documentation relating to the incident was also collected. A task analysis (see Case Study 3) of the job of the top floor person was carried out in order to examine the operations involved and the factors which could affect job performance. Two techniques were used for the analysis of this incident, namely variation tree analysis and root cause analysis. 

The coupling of an SLCA approach, an economic analysis and multi-objective optimisation will be demonstrated in the following by means of case study 2.
