Statistics, the science of description and interpretation of numerical data, began in its most rudimentary form in the census and taxation of ancient Egypt and Babylon. Statistics progressed little beyond this simple tabulation of data until the theoretical developments of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As experimental science developed, the need grew for improved methods of presentation and analysis of numerical data.

Once the sales force can report the consumption of a product by account, performance may be monitored on the basis of knowing the extent of the market. The reported consumption of all accounts, as obtained from the field, is totaled by end use and is compared with industry statistics. It may be found that the sales force does not know where an important proportion of the product is being consumed. This indicates that the sales force is not familiar with the total market. The analysis can even be carried down to the territory and individual level. If the uses of the product have been categorized by Standard Industry Classification, it may be possible to break down industry statistics on the basis of the number of productive employees by regions or states as reported in the Census of Manufacturers. From this may be determined the level of market penetration in a particular territory.

The input-output (10) analysis model was invented by Wassily Leontief who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1973. The 10 model is a general equilibrium model of an economy showing the extent to which each sector uses inputs from the other sectors to produce its output, and thus showing how much each sector sells to each other sector. The lO model shows the increase in economic activity in every other sector that would be required to increase the net production of a sector by, for example, 1 million. In the case of 1 million worth of paint required for corrosion prevention, the 10 model would show the total activity in all sectors would amount to the 1 million worth of paint. The lO matrix was constructed by the U.S. Department of Commerce on the basis of the census of manufacturers in 1973 and represents the actual structure of the U.S. economy at that time. The 10 model has been very invaluable for planning. The 10 framework has also been useful in estimating the total economic activity that will result from net additional purchases from a sector and the total economic loss because of closure of an industry.
