Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) (Dowell, 1994, pp. 30-34.) The OSHA rule for Process Safety Management (PSM) of Highly Toxic Hazardous Chemicals, 29 CFR 1910.119, part (e), reqmres an initial PHA and an update every five years for processes that handle listed chemicals or contain over 10,000 lb (4356 kg) of flammable material. The PHA must be done by a team, must include employees such as operators and mechanics, and must have at least one person skilled in the methodology employed. Suggested methodologies from Process Safety Management are listed in Table 26-1.

THE CONTINUING demand for this monograph and the publisher s request that we prepare a new edition, are an indication that Purification of Laboratory Chemicals fills a gap in many chemists reference libraries and laboratory shelves. The present volume is an updated edition which contains significantly more detail than the previous editions, as well as an increase in the number of individual entries and a new chapter. 

A number of books and journal articles reviewing computational methods relevant to biophysical problems have been published in the last decade. Two of the most popular texts, however, were published more than ten years ago those of McCammon and Harvey in 1987 and Brooks, Karplus, and Pettitt in 1988. There has been significant progress in theoretical and computational methodologies since the publication of these books. Therefore, we feel that there is a need for an updated, comprehensive text including the most recent developments and applications in the field. 

As we saw in Chapter 3, the founding text of modern materials science was Frederick Seitz s The Modern Theory of Solids (1940) an updated version of this, also very influential in its day, was Charles Wert and Robb Thomson s Physies of Solids (1964). Alan Cottrell s Theoretical Structural Metallurgy appeared in 1948 (see Chapter 5) although devoted to metals, this book was in many ways a true precursor of materials science texts. Richard Weiss brought out Solid State Physics for Metallurgists in 1963. Several books such as Properties of Matter (1970), by Mendoza and Flowers, were on the borders of physics and materials science. Another key precursor book, still cited today, was Darken and Gurry s book. Physical Chemistry of Metals (1953), followed by Swalin s Thermodynamics of Solids.

Once these first estimates for the geometric dimensions of the cyclone have been obtained, a full theoretical analysis of the fluid and particle motions in the cyclone may be performed using the theoretical models given in Section 13.2.1.2. A substantial use of the expression (13.26) for the collection efficiency should be employed so that an updated design of the geometry of the cyclone can be obtained. 

The book is not a new edition of the Chemistry of Organic Fluorine Compounds but an update of the 1976 edition with literature coverage from 1972 to 1991 The structure of the original book has been preserved, and it is assumed that its users are familiar with the 1976 edition, which was reprinted by Ellis Horwood in 1992 and to which numerous references are made The book will be useful especially to organic fluorine chemists engaged in laboratory research...

The Isodensity PCM (IPCM) model defines the cavity as an isodensity surface of the molecule. This isodensity is determined by an iterative process in which an SCF cycle is performed and converged using the current isodensity cavity. The resultant wavefunction is then used to compute an updated isodensity surface, and the cycle is repeated until the cavity shape no longer changes upon completion of the SCF. 

N. Auner, W. Ziche and R. West, Heteroatom Chemistry 2, 335-55 (1991). This is a very readable account of current work, and includes an update of ref. 73 with a further 222 references. 

An updated compilation of gas-phase basicities and proton affinities has been published (98MI3).
