Ammonium fluoroborate

Ammonium Fluoroborate. Ammonium fluoroborate [13826-83-0] NH BF, is unique in that when it is exposed to a flame, it generates both a halogen and a boron flame retardant (20). Antimony oxide is usually recommended as a co-synergist. 

Ammonium fluoroborate is both a condensed and vapor-phase flame retardant. It is available from M T Hatshaw, General Chemical Cotp., and Spectmm Chemical Cotp. 

Properties. A suimnaiy of the chemical and physical properties of alkah-metal and ammonium fLuoroborates is given in Tables 2 and 3. Chemically these compounds differ from the transition-metal fLuoroborates usually separating in anhydrous form. This group is very soluble in water, except for the K, Rb, and Cs salts which ate only slighdy soluble. Many of the soluble salts crystallize as hydrates. 

Ammonium and Lithium Fluoroborates. Ammonia reacts with fluoroboric acid to produce ammonium fluoroborate (53). An alternative method is the fusion of ammonium bifluoride and boric acid (54) ... 

Uses. Alkah metal and ammonium fluoroborates are used mainly for the high temperature fluxing action required by the metals processing industries (see Metal surface treatments Welding). The tendency toward BF dissociation at elevated temperatures inhibits oxidation in magnesium casting and aluminum alloy heat treatment. 

High Temperature Corrosion. The rate of oxidation of magnesium adoys increases with time and temperature. Additions of berydium, cerium [7440-45-17, lanthanum [7439-91-0] or yttrium as adoying elements reduce the oxidation rate at elevated temperatures. Sulfur dioxide, ammonium fluoroborate [13826-83-0] as wed as sulfur hexafluoride inhibit oxidation at elevated temperatures. 

The use of ammonium fluoroborate (NH BF as a catalyst for this reaction, is claimed to be advantageous, since the catalyst can be recycled and is noncorrosive to ferrous metals (16).

An ammoniacal solution of the hexammine chloride is prepared as in the preceding directions, using one-fourth of the specified amounts. The precipitated solid is redissolved by the addition of 15ml of water and the mixture is filtered into a solution of 3g of ammonium fluoroborate (No. 23) in 15ml of water. The almost invisible precipitate is filtered off, washed with 15ml of ice-cold 6M ammonia and then freely with acetone to aid in air-drying.

Both ammonium fluoroborate (NH4BF4) and potassium fluoroborate (KBF4) were reported to be flame retardants in both Cl/Br-containing and halogen-free polymers. Ammonium fluoroborate sublimes at 238°C and potassium fluoroborate has a melting point of 359°C. 

During the 1970-1980s, a mixture of ammonium fluoroborate and antimony oxide was offered on the market. This mixture was used in polypropylene with dechlorane (a chlorine source) to achieve V-0. In the absence of added halogen source, the mixture can also achieve V-0 and a LOI of 33% in PP at a loading of about 37.5%. It was claimed that the mixture can be easily dispersed, has excellent UV stability, and is non-blooming, nonvolatile, and odorless. However, its water absorption in high humidity areas was a deficiency of this additive. 

Owens-Corning claimed the use of ammonium fluoroborate or potassium fluoroborate as smoke suppressant in isocyanurate-urethane.107 It was believed that the fluoroborate decomposition products such as BF3, KF, or NH4F act as free radical chain stopper and add across double bounds of olefinic decomposition products. NASA reported that both ammonium fluoroborate and potassium fluoroborate are the effective endothermic fillers of ablative intumescent coating.108...
