Ammonia gas sensor

Ammonia Gas Sensor. The determination of ammonia is important in process analysis. An ammonia gas electrode is usually used for this purpose. However, volatile compounds such as amines often interfere with the determination of ammonia. Therefore, a sensor based on amperometry is desirable for the determination of ammonia.

Another example deals with amino acid analysis using immobilized specific microorganisms in combination with selective electrodes (35). Thus, glutamine could be analyzed by an electrode consisting of a potentiometric ammonia gas sensor and a layer of the bacterium Sarcina flava (American type culture collection 147) trapped in the volume between a NHo-permeable membrane on the surface of the electrode and a dialysis membrane in contact with the surrounding solution (Fig. 10). Using this electrode, steady state potentials were reached within 5 minutes.

Alternatively, it is sometimes possible to gain some degree of selectivity by monitoring selected metabolic events within the cell, rather than total metabolic activity. The use of ISEs to detect product formation from a particular metabolic event can be used to determine the presence and concentration of substrates. Ammonia gas sensors have been used to detect deamination by bacterial cells for the determination of amino acids. However, the development of microbial biosensors capable of specific amino acid detection has to overcome the problem of interference from other amino acids and related compounds.

As the dissociation equilibrium is achieved, a constant pH and cell voltage are achieved. Ionic species will not interfere with the electrode function that is not able to passing through the membrane. Volatile acids can interfere [28]. The pH-sensitive glass electrode can be replaced by the more robust IrO sensor [29]. A very similar ammonia gas sensor can be fabricated.
