Aminopropyl silane surfaces can be activated with either PDITC or through use of a cyclic anhydride plus DCC/ NHS to give amine-reactive surfaces. These reactive surfaces can be used to couple amine-dendrimers to provide a high density of amine groups on the surface for further bioconjugation.

A further modification to these catalysts involves the incorporation of a third, polarity-modifying silane (e. g. PhSi(OMe)3) alongside the aminopropyl silane. The effect of this is quite pronounced, and increases both rate of reaction and the turnover number [30].

Silica-based weak anion exchangers are obtained by direct silanization and are the precursors to strong ion exchangers. Aminopropyl silanes and die-thylaminopropyl silanes are readily available commercially. To increase the exchange capacity, the simple amino group can be replaced with an ethylene diamine or a diethylene triamine function. Silica-based weak cation exchangers with an aliphatic carboxylic acid are available as well.
