Condensate systems can be chemically treated to reduce metal corrosion. Treatment chemicals include neutralising amines, filming amines, and oxygen scavenger-metal passivators. [Pg.265]

Hindered amines, such as 4-(2,2,6,6-tctramcthylpiperidinyl) decanedioate, serve as radical scavengers and will protect thin films under conditions in which ultraviolet absorbers are ineffective. Metal salts of nickel, such as dibutyldithiocarbamate, are used in polyolefins to quench singlet oxygen or electronically excited states of other species in the polymer. The other commercial stabilizer (UV-3), a hindered-amine type, is presumed to afford photochemical protection by functioning primarily as a free radical and/or oxygen scavenger (13). Thus protection should only occur in the primary substrate, the cellulose acetate film, and not in a secondary substrate such as the blue wool fabric. The results shown in Table II verified this assumption the AE values obtained, irrespective of the concentration of UV-3 used in the film, were within experimental error of those observed with the unprotected fabric. [Pg.301]

In steam condensers, such as may be found on power stations, the reduced pressure may induce air ingress into the condenser. The oxygen present in the air may represent a corrosion agent. Interaction Between the HALS Compound and the Antioxidant Present in the Polymer System. Thermal oxidation of the films containing different amounts of IRGANOX and TINUVIN 770 as a function of TINUVIN 770 concentration is shown in Figure 4. As expected, the induction period of the oxygen absorption increases with the antioxidant content, but also with the increase of the TINUVIN 770 concentration. Isocyanates can also undergo a wide variety of primary reactions. For example, they can react with alcohols to form urethanes and react with amines to give ureas. Isocyanates can also undergo secondary reactions reacting with urethanes and ureas to give allophanates and biurets, respectively. Isocyanates can also release carbon dioxide that can appear as small bubbles or micropopping in the clearcoat film.
