Specifications, Standards, Quality Control, and Health and Safety Factors. Formerly, there was an Insulation Board Institute representing the insulation board industry, but the decline in the market and number of producers has led to its demise. Currently (ca 1997), the industry is represented by the American Hardboard Association (AHA). Specifications and standards are found in American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard for CellulosicFiberboard (7). The standard includes descriptions of the various types and classes of ftberboard, as well as requirements for physical and dimensional stabiUty properties. QuaUty control tests are limited to a few basic strength and stabiUty tests, including bending strength, bond strength, and moisture resistance. [Pg.386]

Recent data suggest that COX-2 inhibitors, including rofe-coxib, valdecoxib, and celecoxib, may increase the risk for MI and stroke.47 There is also some evidence that the non-selective NSAIDs may increase the risk for cardiovascular events.47,48 Rofecoxib was withdrawn from the market in late 2004 because of safety concerns. The FDA requested the withdrawal of valdecoxib from the market in 2005. The FDA also asked the manufacturers of celecoxib and non-selective NSAIDs (prescription and over-the-counter) to include information about the potential adverse cardiovascular effects of these drugs in their product labeling. The cardiovascular risk with COX-2 inhibitors and NSAIDs may be greatest in patients with a history of, or with risk factors for, cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that the use of COX-2 inhibitors be limited to low-dose, short-term therapy in patients for whom there is no appropriate alternative.48 Patients with cardiovascular disease should consult a clinician before using over-the-counter NSAIDs. [Pg.80]

The popularity of botanical products in the United States is reflected in a survey on complementary and alternative medicine that showed that American consumers had spent an estimated 5.1 billion on botanical products in 1997 (1). In the same year, the global market for botanical medicinal products was estimated to be approximately 20 billion (2,3). It has been estimated that currently more than 1500 botanical products are available in the U.S. market alone (4). This popularity has been fueled, in part, by the perception that botanicals are naturally derived products, and hence are safe and devoid of adverse effects. This perception appeared to be justified by a paper summarizing the fatality of pharmaceutical drugs and botanical products in the 1981-1993 period, in which statistics compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics, the American Association of Poison Control Centers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed an annual mortality rate of 100,000 deaths... [Pg.191]

Although unfortified cow s milk contains only small amounts of vitamin D, milk lends itself well to vitamin D fortification (NAS 1980A). While fortification is optional, approximately 98% of fluid milk marketed in the United States is fortified with vitamin D to obtain standardized amounts of 400 IU or 10 /ig/quart (FDA 1973). Vitamin D fortification of milk has been largely responsible for the virtual elimination of rickets in the United States (AMA 1955 Gallagher and Riggs 1978 DeLuca 1978). Moreover, vitamin D fortification of fluid whole milk, as well as other milk products such as lowfat and skim milks and nonfat dry milk, is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Committee on Nutrition (1967), and the American Medical Association, with the concurrence of the Food and Nutrition Board, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council and the Expert Panel on Food Safety and Nutrition of the Institute of Food Technologists... [Pg.370]

Soon after marketing of the elixir began, a physician in Oklahoma reported to the American Medical Association (AMA), not the FDA, that he had recently seen six people who had died of kidney damage and who, coincidentally, had all taken Elixir Sulfanilamide. The single best historical barometer for the dmg market of the Civil War era is the Market Report, issued annually by the American Pharmaceutical Association. Unfortunately, the Committee on the Dmg Market was not formed until the association s tenth annual meeting in Philadelphia in 1862, after widespread dissatisfaction with its predecessor, the Committee on Adulterations. 9 xhe first report on the drag market would not be issued until 1863, with Edward R. Squibb as chair. Thus, we have no good source of information on market factors early in the war. But Squibb s report was predictably thorough and intriguing with regard to the quinine market ... [Pg.163]
