Vaccines are used in either the general population of children or adults or for special groups. Recommendations for vaccine usage are made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control. The Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Redbook Committee) also makes recommendations for infants through adolescents, and the American Academy of Family Physicians makes recommendations for adults. An excellent review of vaccine history, development, usage, and related regulatory issues is available (2). [Pg.356]

Clindamycin vaginal cream is the preferred therapy for bacterial vaginosis during lactation because metronidazole is listed as a drug of concern by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)14 (Tables 44—4 and 44—5). Counsel patients that clindamycin cream weakens latex condoms and diaphragms, potentially rendering them ineffective. [Pg.732]

Children with SCD should receive the required immunizations as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.15 Additionally, influenza vaccine should be administered yearly to SCD patients 6 months of age and older, including adult patients. Hepatic metabolism of ethanol involves a nonlinear saturable pathway. Young children have a limited ability to metabolize and thereby detoxify ethanol. Ethanol intoxication has been recorded in children with blood levels as low as 25 mg/dL. Alcohol has a volume of distribution of approximately 0.65 L/kg. Ingestion of 20 mL of a 10% alcohol solution will produce a blood level of 25 mg/dL in a 30 pound child. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Drugs recommends that pharmaceutical formulations intended for use in children should not produce ethanol blood levels of >25 mg/dL after a single dose. [Pg.671]

The necessary components of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) solutions include glucose, sodium, potassium, chloride, and water (Table 39-2). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends rehydration with an electrolyte-concentrated rehydration phase followed by a maintenance phase using dilute electrolyte solutions and larger volumes. [Pg.439]

Guidelines from the Infectious Disease Society of America, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Heart Association suggest that testing for Group A Streptococcus be done in all patients with signs and symptoms. Only those with a positive test for Group A Streptococcus require antibiotic treatment. [Pg.494]

Lactation Quinidine is excreted into breast milk with a milkiserum ratio of approximately 0.71. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers quinidine to be compatible with breast-feeding. [Pg.425]

Lactation Because magnesium is distributed into milk, exercise caution when administering to a nursing mother. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers magnesium sulfate compatible with breastfeeding. [Pg.1272]

Erythromycin - Erythromycin is excreted in breast milk, and may concentrate (observed milkiplasma ratio of 0.5 to 3). Erythromycin is considered compatible with breast-feeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics. [Pg.1610]

Lactation Clindamycin and lincomycin appear in breast milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers clindamycin to be compatible with breastfeeding. Children Lincomycin is not indicated for use in the newborn. When clindamycin is administered to newborns and infants, monitor organ system functions. [Pg.1635]

Lactation According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding and sulfonamide use are compatible. However, do not nurse premature infants or those with hyperbilirubinemia or G-6-PD deficiency. [Pg.1702]

The beneficial role of breast-feeding on immune function in infancy is well established and has contributed to the rationale for recommending exclusive breast-feeding (defined as the sole consumption of human milk, no other liquids or foods) from within an hour of birth (Morrow and Rangel, 2004) for the first 6 months of life for all healthy women and infants by associations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics,... [Pg.46]

Mammary gland size, milk production and release and histology can be affected adversely by toxic agents, and many exogenous chemicals and drugs are transferred into milk (WHO, 1988 American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs, 1994 Sonawane, 1995 LaKind et al., 2001). [Pg.70]

DEET use on children under the age of two months is not recommended. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that DEET repellents should not be applied more than once per day on children and that the maximum DEET concentration used be no more than 30%. Spraying on hands, under clothing, and in the vicinity of food is not recommended. The Academy also recommends against using combined sunscreen-repellent formulations. [Pg.99]
