The anodes (see Fig. 145) consist of aluminium rod with platinum side arms on whioh platinum wires are arranged in 8 turns. The aluminium support is thoroughly coated with rubber. A further effect which is evident in Fig. 1(a) is that of scattering out of passive material. The modelled detector contains about 25% dead area which is mostly the Aluminium support structure. Above a few hundred keV all of the interactions in A1 are Compton scatters, and it is highly likely that the scattered photon will interact in the active pixels. The ability of iron(III) chloride genuinely to catalyze Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions has also been recognized by Holderich and co-workers [97]. The bath is normally at a temperature in the range 620-710°C, depending on whether the coating material is an aluminium-silicon alloy (for use in high-temperature conditions) or pure aluminium (for corrosion prevention). It is heated by inductors, by resistance heaters or by an external flame. The pot will usually be refractory lined unless cast-iron pots are needed to ensure adequate heat transfer from an external flame. As molten aluminium is extremely aggressive towards ferrous metals, replacement of cast-iron pots is fairly frequent.
