Alternative water supply

Alternate Water Supply to Replace Contaminated Drinking Water... [Pg.116]

Providing an alternative water supply, instead of treatment of contaminated well water, can be an alternative method of point-of-entry control. The cost of alternative water supply varies widely depending on site locations.100-102... [Pg.643]

An alternative water supply would be included to provide a safe and reliable source of drinking water until the concentrations in the aquifer reach acceptable levels. [Pg.648]

Protect against existing risk by providing an alternative water supply... [Pg.650]

Alternative 2 leaves all of the contaminated waste at the site and relies solely upon a cap and institutional controls to prevent exposure. Although the alternative water supply lowers the risk of ingesting contaminated groundwater from existing wells, the institutional controls would not be effective for more than 5 to 10 years in preventing the installation of new wells and the injection of contaminated groundwater. [Pg.656]

The time required to achieve short-term protection would be shorter than for any other alternative. It is anticipated that only 6 months would be required to install a new cap and to provide an alternative water supply. Alternatives 3 and 4, involving vapor extraction, require 3 to 5 yr before the risk from direct soil contact and ingestion is controlled. [Pg.656]

The agents selected for these tables were based on many factors, including technical, political, and social. The technical factors for effectiveness in water were stated above. The threat can be real or perceived and still result in civil and social disruption. If the public suddenly lost confidence in the integrity of the water system, a domino effect could result in a panic mn on bottled water and alternative water supplies (Meeks, 2003). [Pg.63]

Attempts to contaminate our water supply can have unnerving effects, including panic as well as societal and political disruption. The public would lose confidence in our government, the integrity of our water supply, and the resulting domino effect could cause a panic run toward bottled water and alternative water supplies (Meeks, 2003). [Pg.67]

There are 50 wells located in 25 quarter/quarter sections of land which were contaminated with aldicarb residues above the 10 ppb level and were used to establish the 1985 aldicarb moratorium areas 33 wells currently are over the guideline level. Because of overlapping, these sites establish 11 moratorium areas encompassing 36,500 acres. Well owners have been informed of levels of contamination and advised to seek alternate water supplies until the contamination levels drop below the guideline level, or new wells can be installed. Under separate rules of the State, some owners qualify for a compensation fund as a result of the presence of aldicarb in their wells. Only recently has the authority been granted to close private wells the authority has not been exercised. Since 1982, 12 of the 75 owners whose wells exceeded the 10 ppb level have taken advantage of the aldicarb manufacturer s offer to pay for bottled water. About 40% of the 51 private well owners who have been offered carbon filters have accepted (6). [Pg.491]

Department of Health Services staff has estimated that over 700,000 people in 32 towns are either drinking DBCP-contaminated water or have had to seek alternative water supplies (12). The estimated breakdown by county, town, number of wells contaminated, and population served is shown in Table III. [Pg.506]

L6 A drought in southern California resulted in water rationing and extensive discussion of alternative water supplies. Some people believed that this drought was the worst one ever experienced in Santa Barbara County. [Pg.427]
