Big name science houses and chemical manufacturers These include such names as Fisher, Baxter, VWR, Cole-Parmer, Alltech, Aldrich and Sigma. It is very hard to get a fledgling account with these giants, but if one can then the sky s the limit. Most chemists should be happy getting these companies products through the distributors.

Ethanol production in the fermentation process was detected with gas chromatography, HP 5890 series II (Hewlett-Packard, Avondale, PA, USA) equipped with a flame ionisation detector (FID) and GC column Porapak QS (Alltech Associates Inc., Deerfield, IL, USA) 100/120 mesh. The oven and detector temperature were 175 and 185 °C, respectively. Nitrogen gas was used as a carrier. Isopropanol was used as an internal standard.

The cracking of diphenylmethane (DPM) was carried out in a continuous-flow tubular reactor. The liquid feed contained 29.5 wt.% of DPM (Fluka, >99%), 70% of n-dodecane (Aldrich, >99% solvent) and 0.5% of benzothiophene (Aldrich, 95% source of H2S, to keep the catalyst sulfided during the reaction). The temperature was 673 K and the total pressure 50 bar. The liquid feed flow rate was 16.5 ml.h and the H2 flow rate 24 l.h (STP). The catalytic bed consisted of 1.0 g of catalyst diluted with enough carborundum (Prolabo, 0.34 mm) to reach a final volume of 4 cm. The effluent of the reactor was condensed at high pressure. Liquid samples were taken at regular intervals and analyzed by gas chromatography, using an Intersmat IGC 120 FL, equipped with a flame ionization detector and a capillary column (Alltech CP-Sil-SCB). 

Moreover, such solutions can also canse the sample to crystallize out in the syringe. In this case it is recommended to dilnte the sample and apply larger volumes. Of course, a further possibility is the application of highly concentrated solutions manually with a pipette or, if the sample does not crystallize out in the syringe, semiautomated by the Alltech TLC sample streaker. 

Semiautomatic devices suited for preparative purposes are the CAMAG Linomat 5, the Desaga HPTLC applicator AS 30, and the Alltech TLC sample streaker. For all devices, the syringe has to be filled manually with sample solution and rinsed after sample application. Except for the Alltech TLC sample streaker, each of these instruments can be employed either as software-controlled or as a stand-alone device. The former is more convenient for creation, editing, and saving of the application pattern and instrument parameters. 

This chamber can also be used for storage of plates. Alternatively, the Alltech Multiple Plate Development Rack (Teflon or anodized aluminum) can be used to hold six plates for transfer into and out of the standard tanks. 

A second device for reproducible chamber saturation is the Alltech Latch-Lid eqnilibration apparatns. The modihed lid has two retractable glass hooks passing throngh Teflon-threaded collars, which are used to raise and lower the rack inside the closed chamber. Thus, the plate placed in the rack can be conditioned and thereafter lowered into the mobile phase. 

Reagents. Oxygen-18-labelled gas (99%) was purchased from ICON, a gaseous mixture of 100 ppm ethane and helium from Alltech, helium from Matheson, concentrated sulfuric acid (Ultrex) from J. T. Baker, and chloroform and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) from Aldrich. The reagents were used as received unless otherwise specified.
