Allergic natural latex

For those allergic to latex it continued to be possible to buy natural skin versions, and these are still available as Naturalamb condoms and... [Pg.85]

Delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to natural latex were once considered rare. Sidi and Hincky (1954) suggested that latex may be a delayed-type allergen based on their study of patients with allergic reactions to latex gloves, but without evident allergy to the accelerators or anti-oxidants likely to be present in the... [Pg.701]

Despite the increasingly more frequent reports of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to natural latex, the exact chemical nature of the allergen(s) remains unknown. In contrast, proteins present in latex obtained from the Hevea brasiliensis tree are the cause of the immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated hypersensiti-vity/allergic contact urticaria (ACU) to natural latex rubber. Since Hevea brasiliensis accounts for more than 99% of natural rubber used worldwide, ACU to latex is a significant problem. [Pg.702]

A detailed review is presented of the literature on cutaneous reactions to rubber, the aspects covered including latex allergy, irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The adverse cutaneous reactions to rubber occurring following industrial and occupational or consumer exposure to rubber chemicals or products or to natural rubber latex proteins are discussed. 261 refs. [Pg.74]

Latex allergy The needle cover of the prefilled syringe contains natural rubber (latex), which may cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to this substance. [Pg.2012]

Another problem is that some persons are allergic to the proteins often found in natural rubber. This can be avoided by the use of a polyurethane condom. Unfortunately, as now made, these are more likely to tear (7-9% of the time) than the rubber latex condoms (2% of the time).65 It has been suggested that they be made of guayule rubber latex, which is free of the allergens.66 Thermoplastic elastomers, such as polystyrene-6-(ethylene-co-butene)-Apolystyr ene have been used to make gloves that are more resistant to ozone than those made of natural rubber.67 These should resist aging better than those made of natural rubber. It should be possible to mold a condom without holes from a thermoplastic rubber. [Pg.489]

In the ASTM, there is also current work to develop requirements and standardised test methods for those chemicals that are clearly associated with allergic reactions, as well as for determination of allergenic relevant natural rubber latex proteins (Table 2). [Pg.420]

At the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) between 1974 and 1997, a total of 85 cases of allergic contact dermatitis were diagnosed in different kinds of painters, lacquerers, parquet installers and paint-factory workers. Synthetic resins caused 68 of the cases, 54 of them in paints, lacquers or raw materials of paints, 5 in floor coverings, 5 in car painters filling cements, 4 in parquet lacquers and one in a glue. The other agents included chromium, formaldehyde, cobalt, colophony, a mixture of isothi-azolinones, and rubber chemicals. No cases of type 1 sensitization to natural rubber latex were found. [Pg.668]
