Alkylbenzenes quality

Factories do not, as a general rule, analyse alkylbenzene supplies on a regular basis. Only occasional checks to monitor general quality are recommended, provided there is a long history of supplier reliability. It is however essential to check each batch of alkylbenzene used in research and development programs, or where the supplier is relatively unknown or problems in sulphonation are encountered. 

The quality specification of alkylbenzenes is dependent upon the desired performance of the product, which can only be tested under practical conditions. However general guidelines are given below and these may be used to establish a raw material specifrcation with a supplier.

Different alkylbenzene qualities may present different phase diagrams and it may be necessary to determine the phase diagram in laboratory trials to arrive at the optimal conditions, i.e. a sulphonic acid phase with the minimum amount of sulphuric acid and water.

The development of new models for the prediction of chemical effects in the environment has improved. An Eulerian photochemical air quality model for the prediction of the atmospheric transport and chemical reactions of gas-phase toxic organic air pollutants has been published. The organic compounds were drawn from a list of 189 species selected for control as hazardous air pollutants in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The species considered include benzene, various alkylbenzenes, phenol, cresols, 1,3-butadiene, acrolein, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and perchloroethyl-ene, among others. The finding that photochemical production can be a major contributor to the total concentrations of some toxic organic species implies that control programs for those species must consider more than just direct emissions (Harley and Cass, 1994). This further corroborates the present weakness in many atmospheric models. 

Experimental thermochemical results were mainly required to extend the para-metrization of the current force fields to highly strained compounds. Heats of formation calculated with Allinger s MM2 force field for alkanes32) and its extension to alkylbenzenes 30) proved to be in by far the best agreement with the experimental results 27). A few examples which demonstrate the quality of this agreement are shown in Table 1. 

To a very small extent EB undergoes alkylation to diphenylethane. The DEB and TEB can be easily recovered by transalkylation with benzene to EB, so they can be considered useful products. Conversely, the formation of olefins and other alkylbenzenes heavily affects the efficiency of the process by increasing the specific consumption of ethylene and benzene and reducing the EB quality. 

The use of this higher SO3 concentration is possible for linear alkylbenzenes, without significant quality penalties.

The quality of alkylbenzene sulphonate from 20% oleum plants is normally very good. The free oil figures fall in a range between 0.6 and 1.7% on 100% AD. Due to the dissolved sulphuric acid in the sulphonic acid phase, the sodium sulphate levels on 1(X)% AD vary between 6 and 15% depending on the type of alkylate and the efficiency of the separation process of sulphonic acid/spent acid. Paste colour is normally very good, wiA values well below 1(X) Klett (5% AD solution, 4 cm cell, F42 filter).

Alkylbenzene sulfonate is yet another complex mixture of compounds the aromatic ring may be attached to any non-terminal C-atom of the alkyl chain. Thus, the product distribution is statistical. Furthermore, the chain length may differ (Cio to C14). Therefore, a complete separation of all components is not to be expected. However, the optimized separation of an LAS raw material sample, Marlon APR (Chem. Werke Hills, Marl, Germany) shows that a separation into homologues (Cio to C13) is possible, although the respective major components of the different peak groups represent sum signals of the various isomers. When present, alkyl benzenes tend to form droplets in suspension in the wash liquor. In the absorber, these droplets associate with precipitated sulfur particles and make it difficult to float-off the sulfur in the oxidizer. Whenever the alkylbenzene concentration of the sour gas exceeds 2 grams per actual cubic meter, the gas must be fractionally condensed and passed through an electrostatic detarrer (Moyes and Wilkinson, 1973A Smith et al., 1976). The benzene and heavier aromatics (BTX) content of the sour gas should be reduced in the same way to ensure good quality froth in the oxidizer and limit foam formation inside the absorber. Holding the concentration of BTX below 5 grams per actual cubic meter of gas will usually be sufficient to prevent foaming problems.
