Figure 10.2 illustrates selected examples of these epoxide products. Aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes proved to be excellent substrates, regardless of steric or electronic effects, with the exception of pyridine carboxaldehydes. Yields of aliphatic and a,/ -unsaturated aldehydes were more varied, though the enantio-selectivities were always excellent. The scope of tosylhydrazone salts that could be reacted with benzaldehyde was also tested (Fig. 10.3) [29]. Electron-rich aromatic tosylhydrazones gave epoxides in excellent selectivity and good yield, except for the mesitaldehyde-derived hydrazone. Heteroaromatic, electron-poor aromatic and a,/ -unsaturated-derived hydrazones gave more varied results, and some substrates were not compatible with the catalytic conditions described. The use of stoichiometric amounts of preformed sulfonium salt derived from 4 has been shown to be suitable for a wider range of substrates, including those that are incompatible with the catalytic cycle, and the sulfide can be recovered quantitatively afterwards [31]. Overall, the demonstrated scope of this in situ protocol is wider than that of the alkylation/deprotonation protocol, and the extensive substrate... As first described by Krizan and Martin,6 the in situ trapping protocol, i.e., having the base and electrophile present in solution simultaneously, makes it possible to lithiate substrates that are not applicable in classical ortho-lithiation reactions.7 Later, Caron and Hawkins utilized the compatibility of lithium diisopropylamide and triisopropyl borate to synthesize arylboronic acid derivatives of bulky, electron deficient neopentyl benzoic acid esters.8 As this preparation illustrates, the use of lithium tetramethylpiperidide instead of lithium diisopropylamide broadens the scope of the reaction, and makes it possible to functionalize a simple alkyl benzoate.2... [Pg.71]

Although the synthesis of multiple-pyrrolyl compounds can be achieved by SnAt reactions of perfluoroaromatics with pyrrolylsodium at ambient temperature <96JOC9012>, deleterious side reactions are often observed during attempted A-alkylations of the alkali salts of pyrrole. Implementation of the C5, C5 -hydroxy lation protocol as described in Scheme 7.19 above (71/72 to 73/74) provided further efficiencies. The C5,C5 -chlorination proceeded uneventfully, but the chloro to alkoxy interchange was difficult and required optimization of the reaction conditions. The catalyst system derived from Pd2dba3 and the X-phos(t-Bu) ligand proved to be effective in the coupling with KOH to provide the desired bisphenol. The resulting product was highly unstable and decomposed under a one-pot alkylation protocol. Since imines derived from alkyl-alkyl ketones are relatively unstable, reductive amination may be more practical compared to imine reduction.
